My Fiancé Married My Best Friend Chapter 07

My Fiancé Married My Best Friend Chapter 07

After the reception, Xavier drove me home. He’d bought a sprawling penthouse overlooking Central Park and

decorated it in the style I’d once mentioned I loved. Soft neutrals. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Art that felt alive.

On the marble table at the center of the living room sat a perfect vase of crimson roses. A small card leaned

against it.

I picked it up. The handwriting was bold. Confident. But the words were… *I’m sorry I’m late.* -Xavier.

Hot tears slipped silently down my cheeks.

Xavier Thorne wasn’t just some powerful stranger I’d recruited. He was my first love. And I was starting to understand he was my only real one.

At nineteen, he was the golden heir to a vast fortune. I was a scholarship girl from Queens.

He was my first everything. And I was his. He’d wait outside my classrooms in his leather jacket. A restless

statue. He’d take up two library seats just to sit across from me and grin instead of studying. He’d skip

important meetings-meetings I later learned were with mobsters, not professors-just to nurse me through

the flu. At two in the morning, he’d drag me out and drive us to the shore to watch the sunrise.

I’d whisper my fears. “We’re too different. It won’t last.”

He’d kiss my forehead. His voice was a threat. “Nina. I’m going to marry you. Carve that into stone.”

But the Thorne family would never let their only heir marry for love. Certainly not to a nobody. His mother

came to visit me. The check she offered could’ve bought my entire block. I refused. I believed in our defiance.

Sophomore year, Xavier vanished. No calls. No texts. I received one brief letter on heavy stationery saying

he’d been reassigned to run the family’s European operations. Passport and phone confiscated. Our

connection was severed.

The dark times came after that.

His mother’s final words had been ice. “You were never suitable.”

A month later, the pregnancy test showed positive. Desperate, I went the illegal route. The hemorrhaging

followed.

Afterward, the doctor told me I’d never carry a child again.

I became a ghost. Suicidal by the hour. Then Liam Russo appeared. All dangerous charm. He made me feel alive. In hindsight, it was nothing but a cruel joke.

Then Xavier came back. Five years later. I was wearing Liam’s ring. Xavier had learned everything. This man who’d never flinched at enemy gunfire broke down in front of me in a quiet corner of a café.

“Nina… God, I’m so sorry. I’m too late. If I’d known… I would’ve burned the world down to save you.” His voice cracked. He said he’d never let go. He’d clawed his way to the top of his family’s empire. Become the Don.

Just to have the power to choose. To come back for me.

He wanted to fix it. To make amends. To start over.

I didn’t blame him. I blamed the naive girl who fell for a prince, knowing the fairytale never ends well for

commoners.

I held up my hand. The diamond glittered under the lights. “I’m engaged, Xavier. I’m getting married next

month.” I smiled. My eyes burned.

The light in his eyes died. He swallowed. Nodded. Wished me happiness in a hollow voice. Before he left, he pressed a plain black card into my hand. No title. Just a name and a number. “Anywhere. Anytime. I owe you

too much to ever say no.”

I kept the card. But I didn’t call.

Not until I found that journal. The thought of leaving quietly, humiliated, made me sick. I wanted Liam to see

it all. I wanted a wedding.

I dialed Xavier with shaking hands.

A long silence. Then he said, “Done, Nina. I’ll give you a wedding they’ll talk about for decades.”
