My Fiancé Married My Best Friend Chapter 04

My Fiancé Married My Best Friend Chapter 04

That night, I flew back to New York.

The city lights sprawled beneath me. I sent a text: *I’m back. Tomorrow. City Hall.*

The reply came instantly: I’ll be there.

Liam had left all the wedding planning to me. He was too busy consolidating his territory and fighting off rival families. Every decision had been mine. Now I’d made one more: I’d changed the groom.

On the morning of the wedding, I walked down the steps of my parents’ brownstone in my ivory couture wedding gown. A sleek black sedan idled at the curb.

Of course, Liam was there too. Leaning against his Ferrari. A bouquet of blood-red roses in his hand. He looked exhausted. Wired. But his expression was softer.

“Nina. Look. I’ve been a total bastard. A complete bastard. But we’ll get through this. I’ll be the perfect groom. We’ll make it work.” He stepped closer. His voice dropped. “Just… promise me you’ll leave Chloe alone after today. She still really cares about you, you know?”

He said it like he was pardoning me. Like everything was for her.

I just shook my head. The tulle rustled. “No.”

Irritation flickered in his eyes. He thought I was still playing games. He grabbed my wrist. That familiar iron grip. “Get in the car, Nina. Now.”

“Liam, let go of me!”

He shoved me roughly into the passenger seat despite my struggles. “It’s our wedding day. Don’t be difficult.”

“Liam, you don’t understand. The groom isn’t—”

His phone cut me off. It was Chloe’s ringtone. Her panicked sobs filled the car. “Liam! A car… it hit me! I’m so scared! The baby…!”

His face went white. “I’m coming. Hold on, baby.”

He floored the accelerator. The car screamed away from the curb. Away from the waiting sedan. Away from my wedding.

Panic and fury detonated inside me. I hammered the window. “Stop the car! Liam, I need to get married!”

“Chloe’s been in an accident and you’re worried about a party?!” He roared, wrenching the wheel. Tires shrieked. “The wedding is canceled! Jesus, are you that desperate?”

“Did she die?” I hissed. Cold rage. Even I was shocked by it. “If she didn’t, it’s none of my business!”

He didn’t answer. Just pressed the accelerator harder. The city blurred. 80… 90… 100 miles per hour.

My head slammed against the window when he took a turn. A sharp crack of pain. Warm blood trickled down my temple.

He glanced at me. “You deserved that. Now sit there and shut up while we fix this. And you’re going to apologize to Chloe—”

I stopped listening. I thought about the journal. The kiss. The baby. The cold, calculated, meticulously documented betrayal.

A strange calm settled over me.

As he drew breath for his next sentence, I reached over. My hand, still slick with blood from my wounded palm, yanked the door handle.

Wind howled into the car. My veil whipped wildly.

Liam’s head snapped toward me. “Nina! What the hell are you doing—”

I didn’t let him finish. I pitched myself sideways out of the speeding car.

The world became tumbling chaos. Asphalt. Sky. Searing pain. The last thing I heard was his scream. Growing more and more desperate.

“Nina!”
