My Fiance Married His Childhood Sweetheart Before Our Engagement Party Chapter 08

Olivia watched my expression carefully.

“What do you feel?”

I did not answer.

I was thinking about something else.

The notebook.

The one I had hidden under the guest room mattress.

Brown cover.

Worn corners.

On the front, I had written one line.

[One Hundred Small Things About Adrian.]

I had written sixty-seven entries.

The sixty-eighth had stopped halfway through a sentence.

I wondered if he had found it when he stripped the bed.

Olivia seemed to guess what I was thinking.

Another message came in.

“James says he found the notebook. He read it, then sat alone in the guest room for more than an hour.”

“And then?”

“And then Sophia called and asked him to go with her to try on wedding dresses.”

“Did he go?”

“He went.”

Sophia called him, and he put down the notebook.

When I called, he said we would talk later.

That was how it had been for three years.

His response to Sophia was immediate.

His response to me was read and unanswered.

That was not carelessness.

That was ranking.

I had never been high on his list.

Olivia stared at me for a long while.

“You really aren’t crying.”

“I cried enough outside the ballroom.”

“That’s enough. I don’t want to cry anymore.”

The next morning, my video interview began.

“Evelyn Hart, right? Honestly, you were our top candidate three years ago.”

The director in Silicon Valley smiled at me through the screen.

His office was bright.

Behind the floor-to-ceiling windows, the skyline stretched wide.

He flipped through my file, his tone carrying a hint of genuine regret.

“When you turned us down, I was surprised. We hired a few people afterward, but none of them quite fit.”

“Personal reasons.”

“And now?”

“Now there are no personal reasons.”

He looked at me for a second, did not pry, and nodded.

“You start next Monday. The company will arrange your flight and temporary hotel. Once you arrive, report directly to HR.”

Olivia had listened to the whole thing from the side.

The second the video call ended, she jumped up.

“Fifty thousand a year, Eve. Are you about to take off?”

“Let me start first. Don’t lift me too high. Falling hurts.”

She snorted and went back to packing my suitcase.
