My Fiancé Kissed His “Just a Friend” in the Break Room. Oops—I Kissed Their Freedom Goodbye. Chapter 08

When Sasha saw that I still wasn’t reacting, she tried to step toward me.

A bodyguard stuck out an arm. Stopped her three feet away.

Ronan turned to me instead. His face was a wreck, but his eyes were desperate.

“Vera… we were engaged. We were supposed to get married.”

He took a shaky breath. “Think about how good I’ve been to you. I brought you coffee every morning. I always did what you said. I never once raised my voice at you.”

“That ring… I know it was small, but I saved for three months to buy it.”

His voice cracked. “Vera, why didn’t you tell me who your parents were? If I had known, I never would have…”

I looked him right in the eye. “If you had known… what?”

Ronan couldn’t answer. I smiled.

“Why would I mention it? It’s not something I earned. What’s there to say?”

He finally stammered out, “But… if you had told me, I would have treated you even better. I never would have let Sasha into the company. I wouldn’t have…”

I cut him off. “You wouldn’t have what?”

“Wouldn’t have fooled around with another woman while you were engaged to me? Or wouldn’t have stood there while she bullied me?”

Ronan had nothing to say.

My dad turned to the bodyguards behind him. Two words. “Take them.”

Both Ronan and Sasha went pale.

Ronan backed away, hands up. “Mr. DeLeon. Where are you taking us? I’m sorry. I’m really sorry.”

My dad didn’t even look at him. Just turned and walked out.

My mom took my hand and followed.

When we passed Sasha, she suddenly spoke. Dismissive. Bitter.

“You win, Vera.”

Her swollen lips twisted. “With parents like yours, of course you can pretend to be above it all. You don’t have to do anything. Just stand there and look calm.”

“Your dad hits people for you. Your mom lies for you.”

I stopped walking. Turned around. Looked at her.

Sasha’s face was a mess. Bruised. Bloodied. But her eyes were full of bitterness and anger.

I gave a faint smile.

“I didn’t win.”

She blinked.

“Because I was never competing with you. I never even entered the game. There’s no winning or losing.”

I tilted my head. “But you’re right about one thing. With parents like mine? I learned a long time ago not to waste a single glance on people who aren’t worth it.”

I turned and walked away.

Behind me, I could hear Sasha screaming something else. Didn’t catch it. Didn’t care.

But clearly, my parents weren’t done being angry.
