My Fiance Has Been Married For Six Years Behind My Back Chapter 02

My Fiance Has Been Married For Six Years Behind My Back Chapter 02

I wandered the streets without direction until I found myself near St. Aurelian Medical Center.

The building loomed ahead of me, massive and cold, like something pressing down on my chest.

“Nerissa! What are you doing here?”

My mother’s voice cut through the haze, bright with surprise.

“Elowen heard you’re getting married-she’s been in better spirits. She keeps saying she wants to be your

bridesmaid.”

All the bitterness in my throat stalled there.

I forced it down and lifted a smile.

“How is she?”

My mother’s expression faltered.

“Not good. The doctors say the cancer’s spreading again. If it weren’t for the imported medication Cassian

arranged, she would’ve…”

His name hit me like a bell tolling in my skull.

Ever since I got together with him, my sister’s medical bills had stopped crushing us. My mother no longer had to work herself to exhaustion just to keep us afloat.

The hospital room had been upgraded to a private oncology suite.

Even the doctors had said it outright-without those overseas specialists and the medication, Elowen

wouldn’t have made it this long.

My mother shook her head, forcing a smile.

“Listen to me, going on about all this.”

“As long as you walk down the aisle and end up happy, that’s all your father and I ever wanted.”

Two years ago, my father died at a construction site.

Faulty materials. The building collapsed on the spot.

They didn’t take responsibility. Said it was operator error. Refused even the most basic compensation.

We were left carrying not just the loss-but the blame.

It was Cassian who hired the lawyers. Cassian who forced the truth back into the light.

And suddenly, it hit me.

This wasn’t a relationship I could walk away from just because I wanted my dignity back.

On the way to the room, my mother kept talking, her voice soft but insistent.

“This whole floor is practically empty. That’s all because of Cassian. He truly cares about you.”

Cares?

Maybe he did.

When I had nothing-when I was desperate, when every dollar mattered-he showed up out of nowhere and

gave my sister a chance to live.

Back then, I didn’t dare date anyone. I couldn’t afford it. Even a small gift felt like a burden I couldn’t carry.

The best I could offer was a clumsy hand-knit sweater.

And yet-

A man like Cassian Virell, who wore tailored suits worth more than I’d ever seen in my life, had taken one

look at that uneven, loose-threaded sweater…

…and stripped off his designer coat without hesitation.

“Nerissa, you made this?” he’d said, smiling like it was priceless. “I love it.”

The second year we were together, I was on a work trip when an earthquake hit.

The roads were blocked. Communication was down. Aftershocks kept coming.

I didn’t understand the local accents, couldn’t even ask for help properly.

I dragged my injured leg through the freezing night, surviving on vending machine snacks, waiting in a place

that felt like hell.

And then-

He came.

Against all reason, against all odds, he forced his way into that disaster zone.

“Nerissa. Don’t be scared. I’m here.”

He had been light. Sudden. overwhelming.

Something that tore into my world without asking permission.

And now he was telling me-

That everything between us had started as nothing more than a drunken dare.

That Delphine had tossed my contact to him like I was a joke she’d lost.

My mother pushed open the hospital door, smiling knowingly as she nudged my arm.

“Nerissa, look who’s here.”

Inside the room, Cassian stood by the bed, speaking to Elowen as if nothing in the world had changed.

On the table sat carefully prepared meals from a private dietitian, along with a bouquet of deep crimson

roses she loved.

Elowen looked up the moment she saw me, her pale face lighting up with a fragile smile.

“Hey, you’re here! You came with Cassian?”

“He even asked me to help pick your wedding dress. I really want to see you in it.”

My mother’s words echoed in my ears.

You have to appreciate a man like him.

But when my eyes met Cassian’s-

That calm, certain look, like everything was already decided-

A chill crept through me, spreading from my spine to my fingertips.

But this perfect marriage everyone envied…was nothing more than a whim from my best friend-a careless

bet she’d lost.
