My Fiancé Fired Me and His Girl Took My Code Chapter 09

Restoring the data was harder than I’d anticipated. The eleven engineers on the team didn’t sleep for the

entire night, and we only managed to recover a fraction of it.

Regardless, we’d plugged the security hole. The user funds were safe from hijacking.

We basically lived at the office, but after three days, the system was stabilized.

On the third day, the deadline for the equity buyout, Preston was nowhere to be seen.

I’d been too busy to notice if he’d been in the office or not.

I was just about to call him to demand the money when Preston walked in, his mother trailing behind him.

It had only been three days, but Preston looked ten years older. His cheeks were sunken, his eyes were circled in dark bags, and his temples were already streaked with gray.

He wasn’t even thirty, but he looked like he was in his late forties.

His mother rushed over as soon as she saw me, putting on a sickeningly sweet display of affection.

“Valerie, dear! I brought Pres to apologize. Don’t blame him. Blame that Chloe girl. Who knew she was a spy? She tricked him! Pres was just confused for a minute. Look, six years of history… you have to forgive him.”

I pulled my hand away, watching her with a blank stare.

“Mrs. Wilson, I don’t blame him. In fact, I’m actually quite grateful.”

Preston’s mother looked stunned. “So… you forgive him?”

She started to smile, but I dumped a bucket of ice water on her.

“I don’t. I’m grateful because he showed me exactly who he is, and saved me from a lifetime of betrayal.”

Preston’s face went white.

He looked at me, his eyes full of hollow regret.

“Val, are you really being this heartless? Don’t you know? I’ve been fired. I’m unemployed. It was all that bitch Chloe’s fault. I was framed!”

“How did she trick you? You chose to sleep with her, and you were the one who pushed for my layoff. If you had even a shred of love for me, would you have been that easy to ‘trick”?”

I looked at him, my eyes hardening.

“Preston, don’t make excuses for your own garbage behavior. You’re just an animal who can’t keep his pants on.”

His face went from pale to gray.

I didn’t have the energy for this. “When are you transferring the money?”

Preston stammered, “I… I don’t have the money right now…”

“Fine. I’ll transfer it to you.”

Without a second thought, I wired him the $5.72 million.

“Get out of my house within twenty-four hours.”

Preston looked completely dazed.

“You… how do you have this much money?”

Before I could answer, Chase let out a scoff of pure disgust.

“Valerie’s consulting fee for this one job was ten million. Plus, she just signed with Luminary Technologies as a Tech Director with a 1.5 million dollar salary and 10% equity-that’s a billion-dollar valuation. She doesn’t need your chump change!”

Preston couldn’t even stand up straight.

His mother turned a deathly shade of pale and started beating her son on the arm.

“Look what you’ve done! You had the perfect woman, and you threw her away because you were too arrogant to see what was right in front of you. She’s worth ten thousand of you!”

“Get out of here! You’re embarrassing us! I told you to stay away from that Chloe girl, but you wouldn’t listen.

She’s a toxic leech, a homewrecker. She’s ruined our family!”

His mother shoved and dragged him toward the exit. He looked back at me one last time, his eyes filled with

absolute despair.
