My Fiancé Fired Me and His Girl Took My Code Chapter 06

My Fiancé Fired Me and His Girl Took My Code Chapter 06

I hung up the phone, and a TechCrunch notification popped up.

#Major tech firm under investigation for system vulnerability and potential user data breach.

Then, Chase sent over another photo.

[Valerie, users are reporting their accounts have been drained. The police are on-site.]

I clicked the image; two officers were taking statements.

The person sitting across from them was Gavin Mason.

[Valerie, I heard the CEO called you? Are you going back?]

I replied: [No.]

She sent back a disappointed emoji.

[Valerie, the company is going to be in deep trouble this time. All of us are going to be under review.]

[Nothing to worry about. Everyone has their own scope of responsibility. What I handled-nobody else is

qualified to take over.]

She replied with a puppy-spinning-around emoji.

[Valerie, did you and Preston actually break up?]

[Yes.]

[So what they were saying is true then?]

[What?]

[I’ll send you the group chat screenshots.]

She sent over several screenshots.

I opened them. They were all about Preston and me.

[Major tea, guys. Do you know the real reason Valerie got laid off?]

[Isn’t it because of the anti-nepotism policy?]

[What policy? Look at the other couples in the company. Who else got cut?]

[Don’t gatekeep, spill it.]

[Yeah, tell us!]

[I heard Preston Wilson requested it from the CEO himself, just so he could be with Chloe Harris without

Valerie finding out.]

[Holy sh*t.]

A string of “holy sh*t” comments followed.

[Is this confirmed? It sounds like a rumor.]

[Right. Valerie and Preston have been together for six years. They were so solid, about to get married. Don’t spread rumors.]

[It’s not a rumor. My source is 100% reliable. I was outside the CEO’s office delivering files and heard the whole lecture. It’s real.]

Another string of “holy sh*t” comments.

[How screwed over is Valerie? Cheated on and then laid off? Six years down the drain.]

[Not screwed. She saw who he really was. Better now than after the wedding.]

[So they really broke up? I respect Valerie. She’s decisive.]

[That’s what you call cutting your losses. She’s got the tech skills, she’s gorgeous. Why stay with a toxic leech? Good riddance.]

[Someone’s about to have a really bad time.]

I took a sip of my coffee.

Perfect.

The storm had begun.

Preston didn’t work late that night.

He walked in while I was eating a bowl of cereal. Just one bowl.

I glanced at him, didn’t say a word, and kept eating.

He walked over and stood by the dining table. The air around him was freezing.

He seemed to be trying to keep his cool, but it wasn’t working.

“Valerie, what did you say to Gavin Mason? What does my layoff have to do with Chloe?”

I ate slowly, not looking up.

“Did you forget that my phone has a GPS tracker for the car?”

He stiffened.

“You, you’re invading my privacy!”

“The car is mine. Since when is it an issue to know where my own car is going?”

He paused, his momentum failing.

“I-I was just worried about her being home alone. Don’t read too much into it.”

I put down my spoon and looked him in the eye.

“She calls you ‘honey’ when she thinks I’m not listening. Should I not read into that either?”

His face went stiff. The look he gave me was frantic.

“You, you saw that?”

I didn’t answer. I just picked up my spoon and went back to my cereal.

He stood there in silence for a long time before his tone completely deflated.

“Val, it was just a fling. You’re the one I really love. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be planning to marry you.”

“Yeah, I messed up. But we’ve had six years of history. You can’t just throw all that away over a small thing, can you?”

“You call cheating a ‘small thing’? Or was pushing your fiancée out of her job just to make cheating easier the ‘small thing’?”

“Val, it wasn’t like that…”

“You want to talk about ‘history’?” I slammed my spoon onto the table. “Did you think about our six years together when you were sleeping with Chloe Harris?”

“Preston, you weren’t marrying me because you loved me. You were marrying me because I just happened to check every single box for the perfect wife!”

He tried to scramble. “Val, no, that’s not true, I love you…”

I waved him off. “Save it. Don’t bother. That non-compete agreement explained everything I needed to know.”

He shut his mouth, looking at me with pure regret.

“Val, is there really no way to fix this?”

I laughed coldly. “Fix what? The company’s losses?”

“Mason sent you here, didn’t he? Still trying to use you to leverage me? Ask yourself, do you even deserve

to?”

He stared at me, his expression fracturing piece by piece.

I pulled out the spreadsheet and threw it on the table.

“You want the house? Buy me out for $2.9 million. Plus the $80,000 for the wedding deposits. Pay up.”

“No? Then transfer the money, and get out within twenty-four hours!”

He bit his lip, unable to speak.

“I want…”

“Good. Within three days, wire the money, and I’m out!”
