He left, and he didn’t come back.

I didn’t bother looking for him; what I had on my plate was far more important than playing house.

Before I was laid off, nobody knew I’d just finished developing an AI marketing agent.

It was already in the testing phase.

The source code and the custom scripts I’d written were my own—they didn’t belong to the company.

The truth was, that non-compete agreement couldn’t actually trap me. Even if I never took another job, I could make a fortune just selling my software from home.

I had just been too invested in that relationship.

Both with the company and with Preston.

I had just sent the software’s test template to a few firms when my phone rang. It was an old client, Mr. Johnson.

I answered, and his tone was frantic.

“Valerie, the system is throwing 404 errors everywhere. You need to fix it, now.”

I replied with polite detachment, “Mr. Johnson, I’ve resigned.”

“What?”

He sounded stunned.

“When did this happen?”

“Yesterday. I was laid off.”

He paused for two seconds, then his tone turned furious. “This is a joke, right? Laying you off? Is your company trying to go out of business?”

I laughed softly. “There’s someone covering my position, Mr. Johnson. You should check with them. I have a non-compete to worry about.”

He didn’t say anything else and hung up.

Then came Mr. Byers, Mr. Martin, and a dozen other clients, all calling with the same problem.

I knew exactly why. When I left, I’d pulled my custom code and automation scripts right out with me.

But this was just the beginning. The worst hadn’t even happened yet.

System crashes, security protocols failing, user data leaks, funds getting hijacked.

These were problems far bigger than a simple 404.

That afternoon, Chloe sent me a message on Slack.

[Valerie, which tool did you use for the log updates? I can’t find it.]

[I wrote it myself. I pulled it.]

[Pulled it? Why? That’s company IP.]

[I wrote it. It’s not in the company repo. I let the company use it for free for years. Consult legal if you want—it’s not illegal.]

She stopped typing.

Half an hour later, she called me directly.

“Valerie, you need to come back to the office. The system is imploding, users are reporting data leaks…”

“I’ve resigned,” I cut her off. “The company’s problems have nothing to do with me. Don’t call me again.”

“But you’re Preston’s fiancée! How can you just watch the company burn?”

“I’m not his fiancée anymore. And even if I were, I have no obligation to fix this.”

I hung up and blocked her number.

The second I ended the call, Chase sent me a screenshot.

[Valerie, everything’s falling apart. Client systems are crashing across the board. Users are blowing it up on social media. The stock is down 2% and the company is losing millions.]

I zoomed in on the screenshot. Clients were raging in the group chat.

I didn’t reply and closed the app.

Preston called again.

“Valerie, why aren’t you at the office yet?”

“Why would I be?”

“To fix the system! You’re the one who pulled the scripts. This is your mess to clean up!”

I laughed. “It’s my custom script. Why wouldn’t I pull it?”

He choked on his breath. “Valerie, stop acting out, okay? The office is a war zone. Can’t you just be the bigger person?”

“No. When the company laid me off, they weren’t being the bigger person.”

I hung up and blocked him too.

Five minutes later, my phone lit up again. It was the CEO, Gavin Mason.

“Valerie, the situation is critical. Can you come in? We need to talk.”

“I’m not coming.”

My voice was cold and final.

He sounded like he was hyperventilating.

“Users are reporting their accounts have been drained. There’s a police investigation now.”

“Valerie, come back and help me. I’m losing my mind.”
