My Fiance Claimed to Be from a Parallel Universe to Sleep with My Bestie Chapter 09

Marcus refused to give up.

He was still struggling to atone.

Even Celeste came to me.

She pleaded for Marcus.

“I was the one who kept clinging to him. The truth is, from beginning to end, you were the only person he loved.”

“Please forgive him. If you don’t, I’ll be held accountable for what I did. I really could go to prison.”

I looked at her calmly.

“If you go to prison, that only means you’re paying the price for the wrongs you committed.”

What did that have to do with anyone else’s love life?

Celeste panicked.

And this time, she stopped pretending.

“I don’t understand why you have to be so petty about this.”

“Marcus is willing to give you everything now. The apartment, the car, even all his shares in the company. What more could you possibly want?”

“If I were you, even if he had actually slept with another woman, I could still look the other way, let alone when he didn’t even go that far.”

I looked at her and found it laughable.

“And here I thought you actually loved him.”

“Love?” Celeste said, her face full of contempt. “What is love worth?”

Just then, someone nearby was browsing clothes at a sidewalk rack.

The shop owner said to the customer, “Are you serious about buying it? If you are, I can give you a better price.”

Celeste immediately seized on that.

“Did you hear that? See? Love is worth next to nothing.”

“You’re wrong.”

I looked straight at her.

“It is because someone is serious that the price can change. That means sincerity has value.”

Celeste froze.

Her mouth opened and closed.

But she could not say another word.

Not far away, Marcus watched the scene from a distance.

Only now did he truly realize how sincere the love he had thrown away had been.

Only now did he realize that what he had lost was the best thing he would ever have.

No matter what happened in the future, I had been the highest he would ever reach, and he would always be the lowest I had ever fallen.

That realization suddenly filled him with a deep sense of defeat.

He no longer even dared to talk about atonement.

Because he truly did not deserve it.

Still, he saved ninety-nine dollars for himself.

Then he bought a ticket to a mountain overlook.

By the time I received a call from the park staff and rushed over, a thin layer of frost had settled over Marcus’s brows and lashes.

I glanced at the cliff behind him.

“What? Are you trying to threaten me with your life?”

Marcus slowly shook his head.

“This height isn’t even as high as eighteen stories.”

“I just wanted to feel the despair you felt back then.”

What kind of despair had made me leave the city tied to him, even with a broken ankle?

I would not tell him.

“It’s over now,” I only said.

“For the sake of the fact that we once knew each other, I’ll leave you with one sentence.”

“A canyon that gives you no echo is not worth throwing yourself into.”

What I meant was simple.

Even if he really jumped and fell to his death, it would have nothing to do with me.

There would be no forgiveness to discuss.

That sentence was also something I wanted to give to the person I used to be.

The last trace of color drained from Marcus’s face.

All that remained was desolation.

He finally realized that I no longer even hated him.

To me, he had become a complete stranger.

The bond that had lasted twenty-five full years had finally become a part of the past I would never speak of or look back on again.

Marcus finally decided to leave.

Before he left, he asked me, “If I never show up in your life again, will you be happier?”

“Will you be as happy as you were back when we loved each other?”

I looked at his face one last time.

I looked at the man I had once loved with my life.

I did not know.

But I was willing to give time the room it needed, to let the past pass and let something new begin.

After Marcus left, Talia asked me, “Nora, will you still believe in love?”

I smiled.

Who knows?

But if I ever fell for someone again, I would tell that person one thing.

“I am a good person. If you ever turn me into one option among many, remember not to choose me.”
