My Family Played Poor While Spoiling My Sister? Sorry, I’m the Real Heiress! Chapter 08

Daniel and Nadia stood outside the police station, faces ashen.
“We owe everyone an apology. We tampered with the DNA test results. Our biological daughter Lorelei learned our adopted daughter Harper was the missing Finch heiress. Desperate to gain access to the Finch family, she pressured us to falsify the lab report. She threatened to harm both herself and Harper if we refused.”
“As parents, we couldn’t bear to watch our daughter self-destruct. We acted out of misplaced mercy. We sincerely apologize to Mr. Finch and all affected parties. We have voluntarily surrendered to authorities and are fully cooperating with the investigation.”
In the final three seconds of the broadcast, Dad sighed directly into the camera. “Lorelei, I see you’ve climbed high and found powerful connections. But you cannot abandon your roots. After stealing your sister’s life, how can you sleep at night?”
My phone lit up with a deluge of vicious messages.
Right before I powered it off, the mastermind behind all this called. “Lorelei. People who steal what isn’t theirs always get caught. Isn’t public humiliation bitter?”
I drew a shaky breath. “Your parents bent over backward to help you. How could you send them straight to prison?”
She let out a mocking snort. “Lorelei, they’re your parents. They said they’d pay any price to get me back into the Finch estate. Even using you as a stepping stone was acceptable to them.”
“”This debt belongs to you. Have you forgotten?”
My fingers trembled. Before I could reply, the phone was gently taken out of my grasp.
“Miss Harper.” Chase’s voice remained calm. “You only want entry into the Finch household. Why stir up such nationwide chaos?”
“Be at Finch Group Headquarters in Washington D.C. tomorrow at three p.m. I will offer you everything you seek.”
The following afternoon, Harper arrived promptly at Finch Group’s corporate tower.
Chase slid a document across the polished desk toward her. Harper glanced down, and all color drained from her face.

Chase leaned back into his leather chair and spoke slowly. “This document lists every contact you’ve coordinated with over the past month: PR firms, paid disinformation networks, and the media consultancy that orchestrated this smear campaign.”

“In one hour, this evidence goes to our legal team. They will file charges including wire fraud, defamation, and unlawful use of personal identifying information.”

“We know exactly which parts of the slide deck you leaked are true, and which are fabricated.”

“Chase…”

“However.” Chase shifted tone. “You have another option. Accept a ten–million–dollar settlement from me, post a public retraction online, and I will drop all legal action against you.”

Harper stared at him in disbelief. “Do you truly believe Lorelei is your biological sister?”

Chase smiled faintly. “My personal belief means nothing. The real question is–did you honestly assume I was desperate to find my long–lost sister?”

Harper’s lips quivered for a long moment. Finally, she gritted her teeth. “…Deal.”

That same evening, Harper’s retraction video went live. Within an hour, the online frenzy subsided.

But the comments exploded with renewed fury. Readers felt duped, flooding her page to vent their

anger.

Minutes afterward, her social media account was permanently deleted.

Everyone thought the scandal had concluded. Yet three days later, early in the morning, a local breaking news alert popped up on every feed: Harper had been arrested on felony fraud and defamation charges.

Rumors spread that she fought fiercely against arrest. But once Chase’s legal team visited her detention facility alongside a licensed psychiatrist, she buried the whole affair and refused to speak

another word of it.

Chase explained to me: Harper was intelligent. She understood her two choices. Serve a fixed prison sentence and regain freedom one day, or spiral into psychosis and spend the rest of her life locked inside a psychiatric institution. She knew which path to pick.
