Ethan’s face tightened.

“How do you know? Have you been digging through my accounts?”

I laughed.

“Digging through your accounts? I haven’t even mentioned the way you arranged my job behind my back. The class parents’ group chat was fake too, wasn’t it?”

His hand clamped down on the sofa arm, his knuckles whitening.

“You took $200,000 from our joint account. I remember that money was supposed to pay for Leo’s Thanksgiving trip.”

I thought nothing could hurt me anymore, but my throat still tightened when I mentioned Leo.

Ethan sighed, his tone softening.

“I’ll take Leo on a trip then. It’s not like we don’t have money. Sophie’s your sister. What’s wrong with giving her Christmas money?”

He glanced at the clock. “Leo and Sophie can’t wait outside forever. Let’s stop here for tonight. I have an important meeting tomorrow morning.”

I let out a quiet laugh, pulled a bank transfer receipt from my bag, and slapped it on the table.

“How much did you and my mother take from me between the two of you? Who does my mother’s account really belong to?”

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“You looked into that too?”

“I wasn’t looking into anything. I wanted to know who all my hard work had been feeding.”

I hadn’t stopped working since the day my biological family took me back.

Mom’s birthday, her medical bills, home renovations. I paid for every last thing.

For five years, every dollar I earned went into our joint marital account.

Ethan had been using it to pay Sophie, and to pay her biological mother too.

The woman who had locked me in a shed for three days without food and left a row of scars across my back with a fire poker.

Ethan drew a deep breath.

“Wasn’t your money mine too? Without me, who do you think would’ve hired you?”

He didn’t know that I’d chosen that job because it was close to home.

I’d given up an offer from a top company overseas, one that paid thirty times my current salary, for that job.

“If the $200,000 bothers you, I’ll transfer it right back. Don’t make this uglier than it has to be.”

“You used my money to pay my enemy, and you think I’m the one making a scene?”

I called the bank in front of Ethan. The moment I said, “I need to reverse a transfer,” he snatched my phone away and ended the call.

“I labeled it a voluntary gift. You have no right to take it back!”

He ground the words out through clenched teeth, then lowered his voice. “Leo knows about the money too. You’ve already lost one child. Do you want Leo to distance himself from you too?”

I stood there as a chill ran down my back.

Our first child had died because of Sophie.

I was pregnant when her jealousy drove her to ram her car into me.

The whole family had urged me not to press charges.

When I refused, they suggested kicking Sophie out of the family.

Then they swore that I would be the only daughter in the family from then on.

In the end, I gave in.

And on the very night they kicked her out, they created that group chat.

Ethan must have noticed my face, because his tone softened.

“I didn’t mean it that way. We deleted the group. Can we both take a step back?”

“That $200,000 wasn’t ‘everyone’s money.'” I looked at him. “I earned it myself. I saved it myself after I returned to my biological family.”

“I’ll pay you back.”

“When Sophie caused the death of our child, you said you’d make it up to me. Is this how you made it up to me? You moved her into my house without my knowledge and handed our son over to her to raise?”

Ethan’s face went cold.

“Do you really have to take this that far today?”

I looked at him without saying a word.

He pulled the divorce papers from the table and skimmed them.

“If you’re really determined to make a scene, I don’t mind signing these today.”
