My Ex Husband Treated My Son Without Knowing He Was His Chapter 14

My Ex Husband Treated My Son Without Knowing He Was His Chapter 14

After the investment agreement was signed, I did something no one expected.

I reached out to Nathan and asked to meet.

I chose a quiet tea house.

He arrived on time.

He’d lost a little weight in the three months we’d been apart.

There was a faint dark circle under his eyes.

“Evelyn. You wanted to see me.”

“There’s something I want to discuss.”

“What is it?”

“Liam.”

His breathing clearly changed.

“You’re willing to let me see him?”

“With conditions.”

“Name them.”

“First. You don’t tell him you’re his father. Not yet. When he’s older and can understand something

this complicated, I’ll be the one to tell him.”

“Second?”

“You see him twice a month. I set the time and place. No contacting him on your own. No showing up at his preschool. No saying anything about where he comes from.”

“Third?”

“Third. No one else from the Hayes family gets access to him alone. That includes your parents. If

they want to see Liam, it goes through me. And I’m present.”

He looked at me for a long time.

“Those are your terms.”

“Yes.”

“And if I agree to all of them?”

“Then next Saturday, you can meet him. Officially, for the first time.”

He lowered his head.

Didn’t speak for a while.

When he looked up, his eyes were red again.

“Evelyn. Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me. This is for Liam. He needs a father figure in his life. But that role exists because I

allow it. Not because you took it.”

Understood.

“One more thing.”

“What?”

“You and I have been done. Don’t let this arrangement with Liam give you any ideas about us.”

He was quiet for a moment.

“Okay.”

Next Saturday.

I took Liam to an indoor play center.

Nathan was already there waiting.

Liam spotted him. His eyes lit

“Mommy! It’s that mister!”

He ran over.

Nathan crouched down to meet his eyes.

“Hey, buddy.”

“Hi, mister! You came to play too?”

“Yeah. I came to play with you.”

Liam grabbed his hand and dragged him toward the ball pit.

I sat on a bench nearby and watched.

Nathan went down the slide with him. Crawled through the tunnels. Bounced with him on the

trampoline.

Liam laughed so hard the whole place could hear it

I’d never seen him that happy.

In those games, he finally wasn’t “the kid without a dad.”

He didn’t know the man was his father.

But the joy was real.

Two hours later, Liam was wiped out. He lay slumped against Nathan’s shoulder, half asleep.

Nathan carried him over carefully.

“He’s out.”

“I’ll take him.”

I reached for him.

Nathan eased Liam into my arms. His hand lingered for a second on Liam’s hair.

“His hair curls.”

“He got that from you.”

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

Three seconds of silence.

“I should go.” He stepped back. “See you next time.

He turned and walked toward the parking lot.

After a few steps, he stopped.

Didn’t look back.

Then kept walking.

Time moved fast.

Twice a month. Nathan never broke a single rule.

Never early. Never late. No pushing. No crossing lines.

He took Liam to a robotics exhibit at the science museum.

Took him to the aquarium to see the dolphins.

Spent an entire afternoon running behind him, holding the back of his bike seat, just to teach him

to ride.

Liam started calling him “Nathan.”

One day, driving home from the play center, Liam spoke up from the back seat.

“Mommy. Nathan looks like me.”

I glanced at him in the rearview mirror.

“How so?”

“Eyes. And here.” He pointed to the bridge of his nose.

“Yeah? I hadn’t noticed.”

“Mommy. Is Nathan my daddy?”

My grip tightened on the steering wheel.

“What makes you think that, buddy?”

“Because he’s nice to me. And when he looks at me it’s different from other grown-ups.”

“Different how?”

“Like… like daddies look at babies on TV.”

Four years old.

Nothing got past him.

“Buddy. When you’re a little older, Mommy will tell you everything. Okay?”

“Okay.”

He didn’t push.

But after that, every time he saw Nathan, I caught him studying him.

Comparing the length of their fingers.

Comparing the shape of their ears.

Once he held up a little mirror to Nathan’s face and stared at it for a long time. Then he held it up to

his own.

Nathan saw.

He didn’t say anything.

But when he looked down, a single drop of water hit the floor.
