My Don Mistook Survival for Greed Chapter 08

My Don Mistook Survival for Greed Chapter 08

The hallway motion sensor light blazed on, triggered by a sudden thunderclap.

It pulled me out of my memory.

Wind outside. Rain.

A rainy night was made for sleeping, not for tangling with Dante.

I pulled my hand back and pushed the words I’d said earlier right back out.

“Dante. We’re done.”

I just treated it all like a weird, wild dream.

When we woke up, we went our separate ways.

I opened my door.

Closed it.

Didn’t give him the chance to ask if he could come in.

I washed up and sank into my bed.

Nothing was un-get-overable.

Sleep, and everything would be fine.

I woke up again.

It was 7 AM.

The rain cleared after the storm, and the wind off Lake Michigan drifted through the thick walls.

got myself ready.

I didn’t want to waste the good start of a Monday.

8 AM class. No waiting around.

As soon as I stepped onto UIC’s campus, I heard the news that Dante and Celina had broken up. It was everywhere.

“I shipped them so hard! How’d they break up that fast?”

“Who knows?”

“After all he is Dante.”

I walked through the crowd of gossips, holding my books toward the lecture hall, when someone

suddenly grabbed my arm.

A slap. Hard. Across my face.

“Renee, what the hell did you do? Why did Dante suddenly break up with me out of nowhere?”

My head was spinning from the blow.

When I recovered, all I saw was Celina’s face twisted with agony.

“It took me six whole months to convince Dante you’re a gold digger! How the hell did you turn this around with just a few words!

“You homewrecker, slut…”

Celina had picked the wrong person to mess with.

I put up with it at the bar because that was my job.

But this was campus, she’d thrown the first punch, and I had no reason to hold back anymore.

The next second, I cut her off with an even harder slap across the face.

Celina was a spoiled Lincoln Park rich girl, she had nowhere near the strength I’d built working my

whole life.

One slap was all it took.

She froze in shock right there.

I rubbed my knuckles and spoke.

“Celina. I don’t have time to catfight over a man.

“As for the ‘slut’ accusation-

“Dante broke up with me. The very next day, he went public with you.

“Who is the real slut?”

The crowd ate up every second of the drama they hadn’t asked for.

Celina tried to keep fighting. I stopped her easily.

It was just a waste of the whole morning, but thankfully my professor sent me today’s lecture slides

and key points.

In the end, she texted me earnestly to advise.

[Renee, I know you young people have these passionate romances these days.]

[Dante is handsome, comes from a good family, he’s the Caruso heir. It’s totally understandable to

love him.]

[But I’ve always been a good judge of character.]

[Dante is easily swayed, and the people around him are not good influences for him.]

[If you get back together with him, your road ahead will be really hard.]

The words felt alive somehow. I read them over and over.

I didn’t know how to reply to properly express how sincerely grateful I was. In the end, I just said what I really felt.

[Professor, thank you. Truly.]

[And-I was never planning to go back.]

She replied instantly with a relieved emoji.
