My Doctor Mother Wouldn’t Pull Strings for Me—Until I Died Chapter 09

My Doctor Mother Wouldn’t Pull Strings for Me—Until I Died Chapter 09

Among the patients waiting in the lobby had been a tipster for the local paper’s crime desk.

He’d gotten impatient waiting outside and pressed his ear to the trauma bay door, trying to hear what was

going on inside.

Instead of the sounds of organized emergency treatment, he’d heard a heated argument.

He’d caught fragments-“dead,” “faked,” “revenge“.

His professional instincts kicked in immediately. He was sure the hospital was covering up a serious

medical incident.

So he’d called it in right away.

The reporters who rushed over arrived at the same time as the police officer who’d come to follow up on the

traffic accident.

The lead officer scanned the room, his gaze landing on my body, brow lifting.

“Adeline Marsh died of her injuries? The paramedics on scene already flagged her as critical, why doesn’t it

look like she got treated in time?”

My mother swayed on her feet, grabbing the officer’s sleeve.

“Officer, what actually happened in my daughter’s accident? Isn’t the back seat supposed to be the safest

spot?”

The officer pulled his sleeve free firmly, voice grave.

“Yes. In most traffic accidents, the seat behind the driver is statistically the safest–that’s based on a driver’s

instinctive reaction in an emergency.”

“But in this case, the driver’s actions were far from typical.”

He pulled out a tablet, tapped a few times, and held it up for the room to see.

“This is the reconstructed footage from the vehicle’s dashcam. It shows the entire incident, start to finish.”

On the screen, Weston gripped the wheel while Brynn sat giggling in the passenger seat, holding a slice of that trendy bakery cake on a fork.

She took a bite, then leaned over and fed the rest into Weston’s mouth.

Weston not only ate it, but reached out with his free hand to affectionately pinch Brynn’s cheek, then took her hand and rested it on the gearshift.

In the back seat, I sat calmly against the window, eyes closed, completely unaware of what was happening up front.

Brynn covered her mouth and glanced at me, then suddenly leaned over and kissed Weston on the cheek.

Weston, playfully scolding her, completely missed the red light ahead and drove straight into the path of an

oncoming dump truck with the right of way.

Amid the deafening crash, Weston’s muscles reacted against their instinct.

He wrenched the wheel hard, swerving to avoid the most dangerous point of impact on the right side, and

threw his free arm out to shield Brynn.

The car spun sideways, and the back seat–where I sat–took the truck’s full impact head–on.

The emergency room went dead silent.

A few seconds later, my mother let out a raw, animal howl of grief.

She lunged straight at Weston and Brynn.

“You monsters! You disgusting, shameless monsters! I’ll kill you both!”

She moved so fast that by the time people managed to pull her off, Weston’s face was covered in handprints, and Brynn’s hair was yanked loose, a cut splitting her lip.

Even the IV line in the back of her hand had been ripped out, leaving a trail of blood.

Restrained and still shrieking, my mother kept screaming curses.

Brynn suddenly wiped the blood from her lip and let out a laugh that sent chills through the room.

“Please. Enough with the doting mother act!”

The pitiful, wounded expression was gone from her face completely, replaced with pure venom.

“That’s right–I saw Adeline’s results. I knew all along there was glass lodged in her back.”

“I just wanted to see how far you’d all go. I wouldn’t have wanted her filthy blood anyway!”

She spat on the floor in disgust, then gently stroked her own flat stomach.

“But it turns out you don’t even like Adeline that much either, do you?”

“Good thing she’s dead. From now on, it’ll be me and Weston–and our kid. We’ll take real good care of you…”
