My Doctor Mother Wouldn’t Pull Strings for Me—Until I Died Chapter 07

My Doctor Mother Wouldn’t Pull Strings for Me—Until I Died Chapter 07

Her fingertips sent a chilling, stiff sensation that made her heart skip a beat.

The color drained from my mother’s face. Her pupils contracted sharply.

“Adeline… you… don’t scare me like this…”

Unconsciously, she pushed again, harder this time.

My body, already balanced only on the edge of the bed, tipped and fell, crashing to the floor with a dull thud,

face turning upward.

My face had already gone a lifeless grayish–white, eyes half open, full of confusion and pain.

Blood had crusted black at the corners of my mouth.

“AH!”

A piercing scream tore through the air of the trauma bay.

Mom’s legs gave way, and she fainted on the spot.

The commotion finally reached Weston.

He rushed over, and the moment he saw the face on the floor, he froze like he’d been struck by lightning.

He dropped to his knees with a thud, two trembling fingers reaching for my neck.

The cold, the stillness beneath his fingertips left him paralyzed, chest heaving, a strangled, wheezing sound

catching in his throat.

My mother, revived by a nurse pinching pressure points, opened her eyes and immediately grabbed Weston’s

arm.

A sliver of desperate hope in her eyes.

“Weston… how is she? Is she unconscious? Why haven’t you started resuscitation! How did I train you!”

Weston’s eyes were bloodshot, his voice shaking apart.

“Doctor… Adeline… she’s gone…”

“That’s impossible!” My mother lunged like she’d gone mad, shoving Weston aside.

Both hands crossed over my rigid chest, pressing down hard.

“Get the defibrillator, now! Epinephrine! What are you all standing around for?!”

Chaos erupted around them.

Weston knelt on the ground, covering his face, sobbing.

“One, two, three… hh!”

On her fourth compression, my mother suddenly stopped, staring blankly at her own palm.

That shard of glass buried in my body-

Under the force of the compressions, had driven straight through my chest.

And embedded itself deep in the hand performing CPR on me.

As the glass came free with her hand, in that same instant, the dark, pooled blood in my chest and

abdominal cavity surged out through the wound.

My mother stared at the blood gushing out, muttering to herself.

“How could this happen… how is there so much blood…”

Then, as if waking from a trance, she pressed her blood–soaked hands frantically against the wound.

“Adeline, don’t be scared. Mom’s here. Mom won’t give up on you!”

I watched coldly from above.

Watched her, after so long, finally be afraid for me. Finally cry for me.

And I felt nothing but bitter mockery inside.

Weston, unable to bear watching any longer, stepped forward through his own pain to pull my mother back.

“Doctor, please, don’t do this…”

“Slap!”

My mother’s open palm cracked across his face, cutting him off.

“How were you supposed to be taking care of my daughter? She got sick and you didn’t even know? And you

just stood by and let her get hurt?”

Weston clutched his cheek, voice raw with grief and fury.

“Doctor, you’re the one who told me to look after Brynn first!”

“And besides… after the premarital screening, I went out of town for a training conference. My phone was

confiscated. Nobody told me anything!”

At the word “premarital screening,” something clicked in my mother’s mind.

She whipped around, eyes scanning the crowd, sharp as a blade.

“Go! Get Dr. Voss from housekeeping. Now!”
