My Doctor Mother Wouldn’t Pull Strings for Me—Until I Died Chapter 05

The suffocating pressure vanished.

The agony in my back released all at once.

My body felt lighter than it ever had.

The pain was gone.

I drifted, disoriented, floating in midair.

Looking down, I saw–on the bed in the corner–a body identical to mine, lying utterly still.

It lay quietly in the shadows, face turned toward the wall, skin an alarming shade of grayish–white.

Its lips had gone a lifeless shade of purple–black.

There was no trace of life left in it at all.

I stared silently at my own body and let out a bitter laugh.

So this is what death feels like.

On the other side, in the bright center of the trauma bay, Brynn was resting comfortably against my mother,

cheeks flushed pink, eyes bright.

My mother gently lifted Brynn’s bandaged arm, stroking it softly.

“It’s all right now, don’t worry. You’ll heal up in no time.”

Weston stood nearby organizing the instrument tray, glancing over at Brynn now and then with obvious

tenderness.

The scene suddenly overlapped with a memory of my own–except the person being so carefully looked after

had long since been replaced.

I reached out instinctively to touch my mother’s shoulder. But my fingers passed straight through her.

I grabbed at nothing but air.

“Mom, why won’t Adeline say anything? Is she mad at me?”

Brynn’s eyes reddened slightly, her voice careful.

“If it’s because I used her blood… I… I’m willing to give it back to her…”

My mother pulled her closer and turned toward my body, voice sharp.

“Adeline, how much longer are you going to sulk?”

“I’m talking to you. Won’t you even turn your head?”

I floated in the air, shouting, desperate.

“That’s not it, Mom! I’m right here! I’m already… dead…”

But only the faintest ripple stirred in the air. No one heard me.

Seeing the figure in the corner remain motionless, my mother’s expression darkened completely.

“Adeline, you’re a real disappointment. You’re just like your father–selfish, cold–hearted!”

“As the older sister, your sister gets hurt, and instead of showing an ounce of concern, all you do is compete with her, and now you’re even trying to delay her treatment!”

Her tone grew harsher, eyes filled with disgust.

“If you don’t get up right now and apologize to your sister, you’re not my daughter anymore!”

“I, Eleanor Marsh, don’t have a daughter this petty and narrow–minded. I never want to look at that face again -it looks just like your father’s!”

I suddenly grabbed the collar of my own shirt.

My heart had already stopped, so why did it still feel like it was being torn apart?

Every word out of her mouth was a blade, shredding what little hope I had left.

I tried to turn and flee, but as I drifted toward the door, I slammed into an invisible wall.

I couldn’t leave the emergency room. I was trapped, tethered to my own body.

Seeing me still lying motionless, Brynn propped herself up slightly, making as if to get out of bed, while

dutifully urging:

“Mom, don’t be mad at Adeline. She must be badly shaken. Let me go talk to her… ah!”

Before she finished, blood seeped from her arm again.

My mother grabbed her wrist instantly, shouting to the room.

“What happened? How did you close this up? Why is it bleeding again? Get over here and redo the antiseptic!

Run a full workup!”

“Weston! Check it again! There’s no way my stitches would come open this easily!”

Weston, holding the instrument tray, glanced at my unmoving body, brow furrowing slightly.

“Doctor, Adeline’s been waiting a long time. Why don’t I go check on her wound first-”

“What could possibly be wrong with her!” My mother cut him off with a scoff.

“She’s got enough energy to sulk!”

“Didn’t you say she was in the back seat when the crash happened? Isn’t that the safest spot?”

“Weston, we’re doctors. We treat every patient equally. Don’t let personal feelings cloud your judgment!”
