My Doctor Husband Made Me Book Appointments, So I Booked Our Divorce Chapter 05

“Max, don’t worry.”

“Daddy’s coming right home.”

Evan grabbed his coat and rushed out, only for Brooke, already changed for work, to block his path.

“Evan, where are you going in such a hurry?”

“Your clinic is about to start.”

Brooke took his phone as though it were the most natural thing in the world. Evan frowned.

She always kept his phone during work hours. On Thanksgiving, he’d only taken one call.

He’d been in a meeting at the time.

Not wanting to disturb anyone, he’d only said, “Stop making a scene. I’m busy.”

Evan snatched his phone back from Brooke and checked the Thanksgiving call log.

There was only one call from me.

But the others had no reason to lie.

“Claire only called me once on Thanksgiving?”

Brooke stared at her empty hand for a few seconds, then nodded. “Yes.”

“Did something happen?”

She pressed him, sounding puzzled.

Evan frowned at her but didn’t answer the question. “I have a family emergency. I’m taking

leave. Ask the deputy chief to cover my

clinic.”

Brooke caught his arm as he tried to leave.

“Claire again?”

“Evan, what could she possibly need? Is she picking another fight with you over me?”

“You’re a doctor. You can’t-abandon your patients! You haven’t even been chief for a year…”

Brooke launched into the same tired arguments, but this time Evan didn’t want to hear them.

He pulled free of her grip. For the first time, his tone with her was stern.

“So you do remember I’m the chief?”

“My patients matter. Does that mean my family doesn’t?”

“Brooke Lawson, get out of my way!”

His shout broke the silence, leaving Brooke frozen in place.

People turned to watch, amusement in their eyes. Brooke flushed bright red.

Evan gave the nurse by the door his instructions, then called the deputy chief himself. Once

everything was arranged, he left without looking back,

After all these years, Evan seemed to hear what Brooke was really saying for the first time.

Every remark painted me as a woman who sat around doing nothing.

He’d heard it so often he’d stopped questioning it. Eventually, he believed all I did was make a

fuss and stir up trouble.

Brooke only had to mention his patients, and somehow his wife slipped to the bottom of his

priorities.

Yet he’d started working so hard because he wanted a better life for his family.

He sped all the way home. When he rushed through the door, he found only his son sitting in

the living room, sobbing.

His heart ached as he gathered Max from the floor into his arms and tried to soothe him.

“Daddy, will you bring Mommy back?”

“She must be mad at me. Tell her I won’t play the appointment game with her anymore. She

can come into my room without an appointment…”

Evan frowned, not understanding, and asked him to explain.

“What appointment game? Who taught you that?”

Max sniffed, his nose red, and answered between sobs. “Brooke. She said kids need their own space, too, and Mommy has to make an appointment to come into my room…”

Evan sat frozen on the couch.

To see him, his wife needed an appointment.

To enter her own son’s room, she needed an appointment, too.

When she needed him to operate on her father, she couldn’t even get him on the phone.

His eyes stung. Guilt pressed so hard on his chest he could barely breathe.

“Don’t cry, Max. Daddy will bring Mommy back. I promise!”

After calming Max down, Evan took him to his parents’ house.

Back home, he entered the empty bedroom. Only then did he notice the divorce settlement

agreement on the table.
