Claire said disapprovingly, “You should have your own mind. Why did you always cater to him?
“Adrian lets me call all the shots when it comes to our place. I made him sleep on pink sheets, and he didn’t even bitch about it.”
I fell silent.
Back when we lived together five years ago, I also loved pink.
I changed the bed sheets to pink, yet he would rather sleep on the floor than in the bed.
He only came back to bed after I switched them to gray.
I let out a self-deprecating laugh, “Is that so? Would he really sleep on the floor?”
Claire let out a cold snort and glanced at Adrian, “How dare he?
“He even wears cartoon boxers that I buy for him now.”
The corner of Adrian’s mouth twitched, and he tapped her on the head.
“What’s wrong with pink bed sheets? If your boyfriend refuses to share the bed just because of that, it only means he never loved you enough.
“And you’re still hung up on that piece of trash?”
I nodded slightly.
“You’re right.
“Perhaps he truly never loved me enough.”
The moment the words left my mouth, I felt Adrian’s gaze slice across me like a sharp blade.
His voice turned icy cold, “If that’s the case, Miss Blake, you ought to know when to step back and stop disrupting other people’s lives.
“If possible, disappear for good.
“Playing the martyr just makes people sick.”
Every word Adrian spoke hammered straight into my heart.
Wallowing in self-pity…
Tears welled up in my eyes, and my voice trembled, “You understand him so well. Are you two cut from the same cloth?
“”You guys love to disappear, string people along until they lose all hope… and then have the nerve to call them delusional. All I wanted was an answer. Did my five years mean nothing at all?”
Adrian frowned, his temper flaring up as well.
“No one forced you to wait. Love and hate are all your own choices. Since you chose to hold on, you must bear all the consequences yourself.
“Or do you think just because you waited five years, he ought to be grateful and marry you?”
His words were ruthless and final.
I froze on the spot.
The last glimmer of hope in my heart crumbled in an instant.
Tears streamed down my face.
He was right. No one had made me wait.
It was my own choice.
So I had only myself to blame for what I was going through now.
“Very well. I will disappear forever.”
Sensing the tense atmosphere, Claire quickly tried to smooth things over and pulled Adrian into another room.
Her lowered voice drifted over, “Have you lost your mind? You know Sienna suffers from depression, yet you keep provoking her like this!”
Adrian let out a scornful laugh, full of mockery, “Just putting on an act.”
I stood there in a daze.
After a while, Adrian left.
I could not help but ask Claire, “Where did he go?”
She pulled me over to do my makeup, wearing a sweet smile, “Oh, he only officially came back over a year ago. He has piles of old cases to deal with at the unit.”
A buzzing sound rang in my head.
How come I never knew?
“That’s right,” Claire finally looked at me through the mirror, “He came back to discuss our marriage.”
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
My mind kept replaying the thought: He had come back. He had been back all along.
Meanwhile, I had been running around the border like a fool, searching in vain.
Claire tugged at my arm, “Come on, change your clothes. We’re heading to the club.”
“You go first. I need to tidy up a bit.” I replied.
“Hurry up then!”
She left in a cheerful skip.
I watched her go, grabbed my bag and headed straight for the airport.
Before the plane took off, I blocked everyone connected to Adrian.
I turned off my phone and tossed it into an airport trash can.
Outside the cabin window, the city lights shrank and faded rapidly into the night.
Adrian Vale.
This time, it’s truly goodbye, forever.
