I hailed a cab and headed straight to the precinct. 

Detective Carter, who had handled the boiler room case, was at 

his desk. 

He spotted me and waved me over, a grin on his face. 

“We caught the whole crew,” he said. 

“Good thing you didn’t lose your cool and actually called us 

in.” 

“Those guys have been pulling this scam for a while, but yours was the biggest haul yet.” 

I nodded, keeping my thoughts to myself. 

Nobody knew I’d called the police the moment I got that 

ransom text. 

Tessa’s games in my past life, and the way things had played out since I “woke up“, had forced me to stay sharp. 

Tessa assumed I was hooked, line and sinker, convinced my parents were in danger. 

She thought I was liquidating my life to pay the ransom. Instead, I’d alerted the authorities. 

When I showed up at Oakridge Reserve to drop that dummy bag of cash, the police were already crawling all over the place. 

They nabbed the scammers the second they appeared and 

raided their hideout. 

Since I was a material witness, Carter let me sit in on the 

interrogation. 

The perps looked exactly like the kidnappers from my 

memories. 

But when the detectives asked if they’d ever actually held 

anyone hostage, the men shook their heads aggressively. 

“We wouldn’t dare. Kidnapping carries life sentences!” 

“We just swiped the parents‘ phones so they couldn’t be reached, then hit the kids with the ransom call when they were panicking.” 

“Usually, they just cough up a small amount and we vanish.” 

“This time, we got greedy because we knew how wealthy they were. We didn’t expect to get played.” 

“We’re the masterminds. Nobody put us up to this.” 

I sat in silence for a long time after hearing their confession. 

So, every lie Tessa “detected” in this life had been true. 

If her only goal was to get me kicked out of the house, why had the results of her lie–detecting been so completely different between my “past life” and this one? 

What else had Tessa been doing? 

I was deep in thought when a cup of coffee was set down in front of me. 

“You and your cousin close?” 

I didn’t answer. 

We used to be. 

Even with my parents favoring her, I still treated her like my 

own flesh and blood. 

Not anymore. I shook my head. 

Carter leaned back, talking more to himself than me. 

“Your cousin’s ability is incredible. She’s helped us close so many files.” 

I’couldn’t help the doubt creeping into my voice. 

“Has she ever been wrong?” 

Carter thought for a long moment, then shook his head, 

totally sure of himself. 

“No. Basically, every lie she’s flagged has been 100% on the 

money.” 

My brow furrowed. 

“So, you just take her word as gospel?” 

Carter paused, then nodded. “Pretty much. Some suspects are too good at hiding their tracks. We need her gift to see through 

the noise.” 

He caught the look in my eye, and I didn’t hold back. 

“If–and I’m just saying if–she decided to cover for a criminal, would any of you even know?” 

Carter’s eyes went wide. 

Until that moment, they’d been just as blind as I used to be. 

I had to warn them. 

They couldn’t keep relying on her like this. 

She could catch a liar, sure. 

But who was going to catch the liar who was pulling the 

strings?
