My Childhood Friend Pretended to Love Me, Not Knowing I Could Hear His Thoughts Chapter 03

I took the bracelet and dropped it into my pencil pouch.

“Thank you.”

He let out a breath of relief and ruffled my hair. “That’s my girl.”

But his thoughts were poison.

[Idiot. Skylar already wore this bracelet. She’s only good enough for my scraps.]

The tip of my pen stabbed into my scratch paper, punching a hole straight through.

I kept my head down and hid my expression.

During junior year, Skylar cornered me in the hallway with a group of her friends, threatening to pour boiling water on me.

Jacob jumped in front of me and took the hit, leaving a long burn scar on his arm.

I cried and told him I would spend my whole life repaying him.

But all of it, the sacrifice, the protection, the kindness, was just setup. All so he could stab me in the back at the most critical moment of my life.

Jacob’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and said to me, “It’s my mom. I’ll be right back.”

He walked to the corner of the hallway and lowered his voice. I quietly followed to the door and opened the voice memo app on my phone.

“I told you not to call me right now,” he said, his tone annoyed.

A pause. Then his voice changed.

“The complaint is ready? Okay, I’ll be there in a minute.”

[Skylar’s mom said the complaint letter to get Elena’s early admission revoked is done. She wants me to come see it.]

[I already broke into Professor Vasquez’s office and changed Elena’s competition proof. Once the anonymous letter goes out, her early admission is dead.]

[She won’t be able to take the exam either. She’ll never surpass Skylar. Not in this lifetime.]

He hung up, turned around, and saw me standing in the doorway. His face went white.

“Elena? What are you…”

“Getting some air,” I said, shaking my water bottle. “What’s up with your mom?”

He relaxed. “Her stomach is bothering her. I have to take her to the hospital. You study on your own. I’ll bring you some sandwich tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

After he left, I pulled out my phone and saved the recording. Then I opened my email and sent a message to the State Education Board’s tip line.

The attachment was a scan of my real competition certificate.

I hit send.

He wants to ruin my early admission? Let’s see who ends up ruined.
