My Bully Mocked Me in Front of the CEO So I Destroyed Her in Seven Languages Chapter 07

“What are you doing?”

She whipped her head around.

“I… I was just passing by and noticed you left your computer on.”

“I shut it down before I left.”

She stood up.

“You went to East Ridge again today, didn’t you? Caleb called you himself, didn’t he?”

“It was required for project coordination.”

“What project needs an entry-level clerk doing Arabic? It’s not even on your resume! How much else are you hiding?”

“Ms. Miller, what exactly did you see on my computer?”

Her expression faltered.

“I didn’t see anything.”

She grabbed her bag and marched out.

I sat down and checked the logs. She’d opened my personal folder.

What was in there?

A bunch of translation exercises-scraps of French, Japanese, and Korean I’d translated for fun when I was bored.

If she saw those…

Just as I was thinking about it, Chloe called again.

“Hazel! What were you doing at East Ridge today? Wendy went absolutely nuclear in the office this afternoon! She went through your computer!”

“I know.”

“You know?! Why aren’t you reporting her!”

“Report her for what? I have no proof.”

“You’re way too… whatever. Look, I heard something today. You want the tea?”

“Go ahead.”

“Wendy and Julian… it’s not exactly professional.”

“What do you mean?”

“Exactly what it sounds like. I handle the expense reports in HR. In the last six months, Wendy’s booked ‘business meetings’ with Julian seventeen times. Every single one was at that resort on the west side. You do the math.”

I was silent for a second.

“That’s got nothing to do with me.”

“It has everything to do with you! Julian only made her lead because of that! Think about it-talent-wise, you’re light years ahead of her!”

“Chloe, we shouldn’t talk about that kind of thing without real proof.”

“Fine, fine. I’m just telling you to watch your back. Wendy is as petty as they come, and she wasn’t just ‘glancing’ at

your computer today.”

I hung up and deleted all the translation exercises from my personal folder.

Then I set a new password.

But I had a premonition.

What’s coming is coming.

The next morning, a company-wide email blasted out.

Sender: Julian.

Subject: Notice Regarding the Accuracy of Employee Resume Information.

The gist was that the company found some employees weren’t being honest about their skills. Everyone had to update their profiles within a week. Any “omissions” would be treated as a violation of company policy.

Chloe messaged me immediately.

“This email has your name written all over it.”

I knew it.

When Wendy went through my computer, she found those multilingual exercises.

She must have gone straight to Julian.

Julian might have praised my work yesterday, but his relationship with Wendy took precedence.

The goal was simple: force me to “voluntarily” admit I speak eight languages, then nail me for “withholding information.”

Employees with a disciplinary record are the first to get the axe during year-end layoffs.

I finished the email and hit close.

In the afternoon, Wendy walked up to my desk.

Her expression was totally different-not angry anymore, but filled with the calm of someone who finally had the upper hand.

“Hazel, did you see the email?”

“I saw it.”

“Planning on updating your resume?”

“I’m still thinking about it.”

“I’d suggest you do it soon. If they find out you were hiding things, the nature of the situation changes.”

“Thanks for the reminder, Ms. Miller.”

She gave a small smirk and walked away.

I stared at the screen for five minutes.

Then, I pulled out the card Caleb had given me.

Solid black background, one line.

I flipped the card over.

There was a line of handwritten text on the back, so small I’d missed it before.

“If it gets to be too much over there… anytime.”

I stared at those words for ten seconds.

Then I put the card away.

It hasn’t come to that yet.
