My Brother Stole My Crown, My Fiancé Stole My Heart Chapter 06

Just as the air in the room seemed to freeze, the pack doctor broke the silence again.

“Wren still has a faint pulse,” he said, voice shaking. “She’s lost too much blood.”

“I can try to save her, but I can’t promise anything.”

Ryker stepped forward without hesitation.

“Take mine. Drain me if you have to. Just bring Wren back.”

The pack doctor trembled, but he didn’t dare refuse.

Ryker watched his own blood flow into the tube, and a strange look of relief crossed his face.

Only when his face turned ashen did the pack doctor beg him to stop.

“Alpha, if we keep going, your organs could suffer permanent damage.”

“Keep going,” Ryker snapped. “Don’t stop.”

I watched it happen, and something bitter and complicated twisted inside me.

He had once been the person I trusted most. He had given me the best of everything he had.

I didn’t understand.

If he could abandon me so easily, why was he willing to risk his life for me now? If I died, shouldn’t he be happy?

Just then, Logan stormed in, his face dark enough to kill.

His hands were shaking as he threw the evidence he had found straight at Sadie’s face.

“This is on you,” he snarled. “You had people hurt Wren in the Trial Cavern.”

“You’re the one who killed her.”

He grabbed Sadie by the throat with both hands.

Sadie’s eyes flew wide in terror as she struggled to breathe.

“Logan,” she choked out, “Wren gave up on living all by herself.”

“You’re the ones who said she needed to learn her lesson. I only had them discipline her a little. How was I supposed to know she was that weak? That she’d keep trying to die?”

All the color drained from Ryker’s face.

He forced himself to his feet, hollow-eyed and broken.

Only then did the truth hit him. He had trusted the wrong person. He had protected the wrong person.

And because of that, he had destroyed the person closest to him.

The shock hit him too hard. His chest heaved, and blood poured from his mouth.

With the last of his strength, he reached toward the body growing colder on the bed. But before his fingers could touch me, his legs gave out beneath him.

Logan ordered Sadie thrown out of the pack immediately.

Sadie tried to fight it at first, but one look at the murder in his eyes made her collapse. She fled in panic.

Logan stayed by my bed and refused to leave.

He cleaned my body with careful, trembling hands.

Then he began talking about the sweet memories we used to share.

When we were children, he had almost been taken by rogues. I had thrown myself at them, dragging them back long enough for him to escape.

But a blade had sliced through my right arm.

It left a deep scar behind.

Logan traced that scar now, tears streaming down his face.

“Wren,” he whispered. “Did it hurt?”

Back then, at ten years old, he had looked at me covered in blood and cried so hard he could barely breathe.

“Wren, you have to live,” he had sobbed. “I’ll protect you.”

But he had never kept that promise.

Again and again, he had hurt me for Sadie.

He had slept with Sadie on the day he proposed to me. And on the day of my coming-of-age ceremony, he had personally sent me into the Trial Cavern.

Logan’s whole body shook uncontrollably.

The next second, Ryker yanked him away.

“Don’t touch her with those hands.”

Ryker’s eyes were sharp and bloodshot.

He stumbled toward me, bent and wrecked, no longer looking like an Alpha at all.

“Wren,” he rasped, “I promised I’d take you across the world.”

“Wake up. I’ll take you now. Anywhere you want to go. Just open your eyes, okay?”

But my body gave no response.

He broke down and pulled me into his arms.

“Ryker,” Logan said hoarsely. “Wren is dead.”

The last thread of hope snapped.

Ryker lost control and slammed his fist into the wall. Again and again, until his hand was torn open and slick with blood.

It was the only punishment he could think to give himself.

“Wren, I know I was wrong,” he choked out. “Whatever you want, I’ll give it to you.”

“You always wanted to see the northern lights. I’ll take you now.”
