When people still looked doubtful, I pulled out my state ID.

Leslie Rivers.

Same last name as Louis.

The tone of the livestream chat began to shift.

[They actually look alike. Did Hailey get this completely wrong?]

[I’ve been thinking the same thing, but I was afraid her fans would come after me.]

[This is totally staged.]

[No way. Hailey beat that girl’s face red. This doesn’t look fake at all. She should call the police.]

Hailey’s expression darkened.

Then a user named Hailor suddenly posted:

[Can’t you people tell? That photo is obviously edited. She planned this whole thing.)

Hailey seized on the comment immediately.

She switched straight back into victim mode, snatched my phone from my hand, and hurled it onto the pavement.

My brand-new iPhone shattered.

She gave a scornful laugh.

“Seriously? You think you can fool everyone with a fake photo you prepared in advance?”

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

My phone was destroyed. Now I couldn’t even call the police.

Hailey folded her arms.

“I’ve been dating Louis for months, and he has never once mentioned having a sister. You knew you were chasing a taken man, so you made a fake family photo in case you ever got caught. I’ve seen girls pull this trick before.”

She raised an eyebrow as though she’d solved everything.

The crowd started nodding.

People who had been uncertain a moment earlier looked at me with disgust again.

More bystanders pulled out their phones and began livestreaming the scene themselves.

Online, nearly every comment about me was vicious.

Apparently deciding the timing was perfect, Hailey pulled up a screenshot of Louis’s transaction

history.

One payment of five thousand dollars had been circled.

“I can’t figure out who received this money. Was it you? Louis and I are still together, so I have every right to know. You’re young, so I might be willing to overlook you chasing after someone

else’s boyfriend, but you need to give this money back. If you don’t, I’ll take legal action.”

Five thousand dollars.

For a first-year college student like me, that was a huge amount.

Looking at Hailey, I knew nothing I said would convince her.

I took a deep breath.

“Call Louis right now. He’ll tell you who I am.”

Hailey rolled her eyes.

“What? You want me to call him so he can come rescue you? Fine.”

She dialed Louis immediately.

He picked up almost at once.

His voice dropped into the deep, gentle tone he always used with Hailey.

“What’s wrong, baby?”

The chat exploded.

Hailey softened her voice.

“Babe, that girl I yelled at through your account the other day… who is she? She’s saying she’s your

sister.”

For one second, I thought the truth was finally about to come out.

Then Louis laughed.

“What are you talking about, baby? I’m an only child. I don’t have a sister. That girl is just some chick who’s been chasing me and won’t take a hint. I’ve already deleted and blocked her. Just ignore her. Be good, okay? My parents will be back in a few days. I’ll take you to meet them then.”
