My Boyfriend Took My Best Friend Home for Thanksgiving Chapter 08

“I said go home.”

Mason raised his head. His eyes were bloodshot, and his voice was rough with exhaustion.

“I’ve done enough for you. And now I’ve lost my own girlfriend because of it.”

“Go home, Tessa. Don’t come looking for me again.”

Tessa froze.

Her lips trembled, and tears immediately filled her eyes.

“Mason… what are you saying?”

“You said you’d always take care of me. You said whenever I needed you, you’d be there.”

“That was before.”

Mason closed his eyes for a moment, looking exhausted.

“Before, I thought Hannah would always be there, I was wrong.”

Tears spilled down Tessa’s face.

She reached for Mason’s wrist, her voice shaking.

“Mason, how can you do this to me? I love you. I always thought you loved me too.”

“I don’t love you.”

Mason cut her off without hesitation, his voice turning cold.

“I treated you well because Hannah asked me to look out for you.”

“I thought she’d understand everything I did for you. I thought she’d keep waiting for me no

matter what.”

He paused.

“I overestimated myself. And I underestimated her.”

Tessa finally lost control.

She stumbled back two steps, every trace of sweetness and helpless innocence disappearing

from her face..

“Mason Carter!”

Her voice rose sharply.

“You’re saying that now?”

“You spent all that time pretending to be my boyfriend. You spent the wedding fund on my family. You smashed up your own leg just so you could spend Thanksgiving with us.”

“And now you’re telling me you don’t love me?”

“What was all of that supposed to mean? Were you playing me this whole time?”

Other customers in the café turned to stare.

Mason’s face hardened, but he didn’t

argue.

He couldn’t.

Every word she had said was true.

All the choices he had once convinced himself would let him have it both ways now looked ugly

and indefensible out in the open.

His silence only made Tessa angrier.

She spun around and stormed toward the exit, her heels striking hard against the floor as she

pulled out her phone.

“Mrs. Carter! Mrs. Carter, please listen to me!”

She was sobbing into the phone, her voice shaking with hysteria.

“Mason… Mason doesn’t want me anymore. He’s leaving me for Hannah. You have to come make this right!”

Mason’s mother was on the other end,

Between sobs, Tessa twisted the story more and more.

Hannah had seduced Mason.

Mason had completely lost his head over her.

She conveniently forgot how Adrian had exposed her manipulation just minutes earlier.

Half an hour later, Mrs. Carter stormed into Willow & Finch Café.

She went straight to Tessa, pulled her protectively behind her, and glared at Mason.

“Mason! What the hell has gotten into you?”

“What’s wrong with Tessa? You’re really throwing her aside for that bitch?”

“Mom.”

Mason looked up.

His voice was quiet, but for the first time there was a weary clarity in it.

“Just listen to me first.”

It took him fifteen minutes to tell her everything from beginning to end.

He told her that he and Hannah had been together for seven years.

He told her how, four Thanksgivings ago, he had driven Tessa home instead of coming for Hannah, causing Hannah to miss her father’s final moments.

He told her how much money he had secretly spent on Tessa over the past four years and everything he had done for her.

And he told her exactly what he had said at the birthday party.

“I have one girlfriend, and it’s Tessa.”

He left nothing out.

With every new detail, Mrs. Carter’s face grew paler.

By the end, even her lips were trembling.

She turned toward Tessa in disbelief.

“Tessa… is all of that true?”

The tear tracks were still visible on Tessa’s face, but now she couldn’t even cry.

Her mouth opened as if she wanted to say, “That isn’t what happened.”

Adrian spoke before she could.

“Mrs. Carter, do you remember what Ms. Morgan told you when she called?”

“She said Hannah was trying to seduce her boyfriend. But Tessa was the other wornan all along

-the one coming between Hannah and your son.”

“You’re smart enough to see who’s been lying to you.”

Mrs. Carter stared at Tessa for a long moment.

Then she yanked her hand away.

“You lied to me.”

Her voice shook violently.

“You made me humiliate Mason’s real girlfriend in front of everyone.”

“Because of you, I put the Carter family heirloom bracelet on your wrist.”

“Because of you, I said all those horrible things to that girl…”

“Mrs. Carter, I-I didn’t mean to-”

“Get out.

Mrs. Carter pointed toward the door, her eyes red.

“Get out of here. And don’t ever let me see you again.”
