My Boyfriend Gave Our Home Access Card To My Best Friend Chapter 09

He’d been listening the entire time.

Daniel’s expression hardened. “What does that have to do with you?”

Ethan only looked at me. “Claire, if you haven’t said yes to him, that means you still love me. I still have a

chance, don’t I?”

At last, I saw his selfishness clearly. He couldn’t hear me saying no. He couldn’t see my pain. He only

believed in a world where my life revolved around him.

I opened the car door. “Not choosing him doesn’t mean I’m taking you back.”

But Ethan wouldn’t give up. Somehow, he found my address. The next day, he was waiting outside my door.

He made soup, cooked dinner, and prepared warm breakfasts. Every day, he sat in the hallway with the food,

waiting for me to get home from work.

“Claire, I promised I’d take care of you. Whatever you want to eat, I’ll learn how to make it.”

At first, the neighbors only watched. Then they started finding it touching. The young woman across the hall brought him water, and the way she looked at him began to change.

When I came home, she couldn’t resist speaking up. “He waits for you until midnight every day. He’s even

burned his hand cooking. A man this good? You should let the past go and forgive him.”

I looked at the blister on Ethan’s hand and laughed. “You feel sorry for him?”

She blushed. “I just think he really loves you. He wants you back.”

“Then you can have him.”

My smile vanished. “You’ve seen him wait for two weeks. You didn’t see me climb seventeen floors for four

years. You’ve seen one blister. You didn’t see the mob, or watch me get knocked down and lose my baby in a

pool of blood.”

The color vanished from her face. Ethan struggled to his feet.

“Claire, stop…”

“Why?” I met his reddened eyes. “Isn’t this what you want? Everyone using your supposed devotion to pressure me into giving in?”

I called building management. “Someone keeps blocking my doorway and harassing me. Please send security to remove him.”

The guards arrived quickly and took Ethan by the arms. He struggled, his voice breaking.

“Claire, I really do know I was wrong!”

I shut the door in his face. “You can know you were wrong. I can still choose never to forgive you.”

This time, even when he cried himself hoarse outside, I didn’t open it.

Another six months passed. I took on more and more projects, and when an investor in the industry made

me my first funding offer, I decided to leave and start my own business.

Everyone told me to be careful. Daniel only asked, “Have you picked a name for the company?”

I stared at him. “You don’t think it’s a risk?”

“Of course it is.” Smiling, he laid his own resignation letter on my desk. “That’s why I’m coming with you.”

I looked up, caught off guard. “Daniel, you’re already running the department.”

“I know.” He held my gaze. “But I believe in you. I want to build something beside you.”

Starting a company was harder than I’d imagined. When we ran short of cash, Daniel used his savings to cover the gap. When clients gave me a hard time over dinner, he kept them talking and matched them drink

for drink, but he never took credit for my work.

During our hardest month, I fell asleep in the office with a high fever. When I woke, he was beside me. A cup

of warm soup and fever medicine waited on the desk.

He saw my eyes open and asked softly, “Why didn’t you tell me you felt this bad?”

Only one dim lamp was on, but I could see the concern in his eyes. At last, I understood that love wasn’t

supposed to make me prove how strong I was over and over.

It meant having someone there when I couldn’t hold myself up anymore. Someone who reminded me I didn’t

have to do it alone.

On the night our company finally found its footing, Daniel took me to the beach. There were no flowers, no

elaborate surprise. He only placed a key to our new office in my palm.

“Claire, I don’t want to win you over with a grand gesture. I want to share the ordinary days with you.”

The sea breeze reddened his ears. “Will you let me?”
