My Boyfriend Called My Mother’S ICU A Bottomless Pit And Her Startup A Gift Chapter 09

Dashiel stood outside the building all day.

When I left work that evening, he finally stepped into my path.

“Sable.”

I stopped.

Security moved forward at once, but I lifted a hand to stop them.

Dashiel looked at me. His voice was rough enough to scrape.

“I just need a few words.”

“Say them.”

He pulled a folder from inside his coat.

“This is the deed to the last property I still own, plus some remaining funds.”

“I’ve signed the transfer documents.”

“Take it as compensation.”

I didn’t reach for it.

“The judgment has already been enforced.”

“I don’t want it.”

His eyes were bloodshot.

“I know I can’t make this right.”

“I know I don’t deserve anything from you.”

“But I don’t know how to let you go, Sable.”

I looked at him.

Once, I had waited for him to lower his head like this.

I had waited for him to come to the hospital. I had waited for him to say, I’m on my way. I had waited for him, in the worst moment of my life, to stop pushing me away.

Not once had he done it.

Now he stood in front of me, saying he didn’t know what else to do.

Too late.

“Dashiell, the best thing you can do is stop showing up in front of me.”

His face went pale.

“Since that night, I haven’t slept properly once.”

“Every time I close my eyes, I hear what the nurses said.”

“They said your mother had already been taken to the morgue.”

“They said you had just come out of a D&C and there wasn’t a single person with you.”

His voice broke there.

“Sable, that was when I finally understood what I had done to you.”

I looked at him calmly.

“No.”

“That was when you finally couldn’t hide from it anymore.”

Tears fell from his eyes.

All at once, he raised his hand and slapped himself hard across the face.

The sound cracked through the air.

People around us turned to look.

He acted as if he felt nothing and hit himself a second time.

“Sable, I was wrong.”

“I was so wrong.”

I frowned. “Don’t put on a show outside my company.”

His hand froze in midair.

Something in his eyes shattered.

“I’m not acting.”

I looked at him and said each word clearly.

“The pain you feel now isn’t love.”

“It’s the shock of finally realizing that the woman you thought would never leave, no matter how much you hurt her…”

“Doesn’t want you anymore.”

Dashiel went completely still.

I walked around him.

Behind me, he suddenly said, “I’ve been to see your mother.”

My steps stopped.

“I go every month.”

“I kneel at her grave and apologize.”

I turned back.

“You don’t deserve to.”

All the color left his face.

I walked closer.

“When she was alive, you called her a bottomless pit.”

“Now that she’s dead, you want to play the grieving son-in-law at her grave.”

“Dashiel, did it ever occur to you that if she could see you, she would only be disgusted?”

His body swayed. His eyes were red as he stared at me.

Before the car door closed, Dashiel asked in a low voice, “Is there really no chance for us anymore?”

I looked straight ahead.

“No.”

“There hasn’t been a chance since the day my mother died.”
