Chicken soup splashed across the floor.

Dashiell rushed forward like a man losing his mind and grabbed the nurse by the arm.

“Who are you talking about?”

“Who died?”

The nurse startled.

“Are you Ms. Merrick’s family?”

Dashiell’s face had gone white. Even his lips were shaking.

“I’m her husband.”

“Where is she?”

The nurse’s eyes went cold at once.

“Now you’re her husband?”

“Where were you when her mother was being resuscitated?”

“Where were you when she had to sign for her own miscarriage procedure?”

Dashiell froze.

“Miscarriage…”

His voice broke on the word.

“She was pregnant?”

The nurse frowned.

“She didn’t tell you?”

Dashiell went still.

For a second, all the color seemed to drain from his face. Then he stumbled back half a step and turned toward the ward.

I was lying in the hospital bed, drained and motionless beneath the harsh white lights.

The anesthesia hadn’t fully worn off. Pain kept pulsing through my lower abdomen, dull and deep, coming in waves.

The room was so quiet that I heard Dashiell’s ragged breathing the moment he rushed in.

“Sable…”

His voice was hoarse.

I didn’t look at him.

I only reached under my pillow and pulled out the document I had kept there.

The divorce settlement agreement.

I had signed it long ago. The edges were wrinkled from my grip, and a small smear of dried blood marked one corner of the page.

Dashiell stopped beside the bed, his eyes bloodshot.

“Sable, I didn’t know…”

I lifted the agreement and held it out to him.

I didn’t cry or scream. I didn’t ask him why.

I only stared at the ceiling and said, my voice flat and empty, “Sign it.”

Dashiell’s hand froze in midair.

At last, I turned my head and looked at him.

“Dashiell.”

“My mother is dead.”

“The baby is gone.”

“You’re free now.”

The color drained from his face, inch by inch.

I pushed the agreement a little closer.

After that night, Dashiell stood outside my hospital room until morning.

The nurses told him to leave.

He didn’t.

But I never said another word to him.
