My Best Friend Saved Me, Then Stole My Fiancé And My Wedding Chapter 03

I checked into the first hotel I could find.

I finished my resignation letter and made a call.

“I’m taking that position you offered me. I’ll be in Ravenport tomorrow.”

He agreed without hesitation.

By the time I finished booking my flight, four hours had passed.

Reid’s name lit up my screen.

I stared at it for a beat. Then I picked up.

He sounded exhausted.

“Maren, you left the group chat?”

“Quit being dramatic. I talked to Sloane. She’s fine with you coming back.”

“But you’ll have to pick up the housework. Cooking, cleaning, all of it.”

A laugh scraped out of me.

“Reid, do you all seriously think I’m your maid?”

He didn’t even hear me.

“Don’t start. You know what Sloane’s going through.”

“Look, she’s having everyone over for dinner tomorrow. She already made a list. Buy the groceries and be back on time.”

A grocery list popped up in the chat.

Sloane’s favorite barbecue chicken wings. Reid’s favorite ribs.

Clarissa’s juice. Graham’s chips.

Dozens of items, packed tight.

Not one of them was for me.

Their group of four. I was on the outside again.

Something in my chest went still.

I wasn’t going to argue about it. I hung up and blocked his number.

The next morning, I headed to the office to sign my exit paperwork.

I didn’t even make it through the front door.

Sloane came at me with a pack of reporters behind her.

I didn’t have time to think.

She stormed up to me and lashed out.

A journal hit the ground at my feet and fell open.

Reid’s journal. The one I’d thrown away.

“Maren! I knew there was a reason you wouldn’t leave our apartment.”

“You’ve been reading this journal and fantasizing about my husband every single night. We’re supposed to be best friends. How sick can you be?”

The confrontation left me stunned. For a moment, I could barely think.

Reporters closed in. Microphones and cameras shoved in my face.

“Miss Whitmore, sources say you turned down executive-level offers from other companies to stay on as Mr. Calloway’s secretary for six years. Were you trying to get close to him?”

“Is it true you’ve been living in Miss Mercer’s home because you’re involved with her husband?”

The camera flashes burned white behind my eyelids.

A crowd gathered. The insults came from every direction.

The ground tilted under me. I broke.

“I didn’t write that journal. Reid wrote it about us!”

“You lost your memory. You only think Reid’s your husband.”

“I’m the one he was supposed to marry!”
