My Best Friend Posed As His Girlfriend, So I Walked Away Chapter 05

The voice came from the crowd.

I looked over and realized it was Lysander.

“Stay out of this, Lysander.”

Calder glared at him.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

Lysander didn’t even flinch.

He walked straight toward me.

“You’re all ganging up on someone who hasn’t done a damn thing. Why should I stay quiet?”

He stared Calder down.

“I get wanting to defend your girlfriend, but this is ridiculous.”

“Verity didn’t insult anyone. She didn’t touch anyone. So what exactly did she do wrong?”

I had met Lysander for the first time that morning. He was Calder’s friend, and yet he was the only person in the entire room standing on my side.

I stared at him in disbelief.

“Hey. You don’t have to fight with him because of me.”

“I’m not doing it because of you.”

His expression was completely serious.

“I’m doing it because it’s the right thing to do.”

Then he pointed at Calder.

“Professor Ashbourne always said that if you made a mistake, you owned it. But you never admitted to something you didn’t do.”

He looked around.

“She isn’t the one who owes anyone an apology.”

“Lysander, have you lost your mind?”

Calder’s face darkened.

“This is my family’s business.”

His gaze moved past Lysander and landed on me.

“Verity. Come here.”

Lysander scoffed.

“What, is she your dog? You call and she comes running?”

His tone sharpened.

“I’m not part of your family, so you don’t get to order me around.”

He glanced back at me.

“And neither is she.”

Then his tone softened.

“Verity, don’t worry. I don’t care that Calder’s my friend. Wrong is wrong.”

“If Professor Ashbourne were still here, he wouldn’t stand by and let people treat one of his

students like this.”

“Verity!”

Calder ignored him entirely.

He stared at me, jaw tight.

Sabine sniffled.

“Verity, please stop,”

Her tears came instantly.

“Lysander and Calder have known each other since they were kids. You don’t want them to ruin their friendship over something this small, do you?”

I looked at her.

Suddenly, she felt like a stranger.

Once, whenever someone hurt me, Sabine had been the first person to step in.

She used to say, “As long as I’m here, no one gets to mess with you.”

We had gone to different colleges, but during my sophomore year, when she learned I had been falsely accused and humiliated, she traveled for hours just to be with me.

She had cried the whole way

When she arrived, she wrapped her arms around me and said, “I’m here now. Tell me who did it. I’ll

make sure they never come after you again.”

She had once told me that even if the entire world doubted me, she never would.

Now I couldn’t tell which version of Sabine had ever been real.
