All six–foot–three of Arthur stood there, looking like a golden retriever left out in the rain. The three guys exchanged looks, completely lost. 

The one in the middle spotted me and switched it on. “Valerie, your husband is insanely controlling.” 

Arthur’s looked close to tears the second he saw me. 

His mouth opened. “Darlin‘… I…” 

I cut him off. “What are you doing here?” 

Arthur straightened up. “I came out to buy groceries.” 

I looked at his completely empty hands. “Where are the groceries?” 

Arthur stood empty–handed. 

The comments rolled in on cue. 

[LMAO he forgot to buy his alibi groceries while stalking the 

villainess.] 

[Do these guys seriously not understand his accent?? I’m dying, let me translate. He said: y’all are overdressed, your mouths are writing checks your bodies can’t cash, and he 

WILL end you.]

I tuned out the comments. 

I pulled a few hundred–dollar bills from my bag and handed them to the three guys. “We’re done for today. You can go.” 

They opened their mouths to argue, but one look at Arthur 

shut them down. 

I don’t know how to describe it. That look was almost feral. 

Nothing like the doormat he was around me. 

Once they were out of earshot, I crossed my arms. “Tell me. How many times have you done this?” 

Arthur stared at his shoes. “I… I don’t know what you’re 

talkin‘ about.” 

I gave him a flat look and waited. 

His head dropped lower. “Darlin‘… I was wrong.” 

“What did you do wrong?” 

“I shouldn’t have followed you.” 

“And what else?” 

Arthur looked up, dead serious. “I should’ve hidden better so 

you wouldn’t catch me.” 

I stared at him. 

The comments lost it.

[The MC’s energy: I know what I did wrong, and I WILL do it 

again.] 

[Wait, did anyone else notice the villainess is all bark? She’s 

not actually mad.]

I took a deep breath, turned, and walked. Arthur fell into step right behind me. 

Six–foot–three, and somehow he walked like a whipped puppy trailing three steps behind me. 

We picked up groceries on the way home. But outside the supermarket, Arthur crumpled up the receipt and shoved it in 

his pocket. 

I watched the entire thing from the car. The man was acting 

sketchy. 

If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s people hiding things 

from me. 

The second he finished loading the trunk and got back in, I reached over and snatched it from his pocket. Arthur grabbed 

for it. Too slow. 

I smoothed it open. Below the groceries, one final line item. 

[Trojan Ultra Thin – 1 box – $15] 

Neither of us spoke. 

The car went dead silent. 

I dropped the receipt onto his lap, my face blank. 

“Darlin‘! I can explain!” Arthur blurted. 

“Don’t.” 

“Just listen-” 

“I said don’t.” 

“But-” 

I glared. He shut up. 

But the second we got home, right before he disappeared into the kitchen, he squeezed in one last defense. 

“The old ones are about to expire, and I just figured… what if you’re ready someday and we don’t have any?” 

My eye twitched. “Did I ask?”
