My Alpha Brother’s Regret Was Too Late Chapter 08

My Alpha Brother’s Regret Was Too Late Chapter 08

To “prove” my feelings for him as family were real, my brother brought Mira back home.

The truth was, he’d always known a lot of it was Mira putting on a show.

But he never exposed her. Instead, he sided with her again and again.

Because he liked watching me panic over him, fight for him, and bend for him.

Every time he saw me cry and saw how much I cared, it soothed a sliver of unease deep inside him.

Only in those moments did he truly believe I would never leave him.

That didn’t change until the thirteen rogues showed up three years ago, when he was genuinely furious for the first time.

It wasn’t for Mira’s sake.

He was furious because, in his mind, that clean, proud, bright little sister could not possibly have hired people to do something that low.

In that instant, he felt like I’d drifted away from the Tessa he remembered, and he panicked.

So he sent me to prison, telling himself I needed time to “cool off.”

That was the same logic behind sending the video out this time, too.

He believed that as long as I was his sister, no one would dare bring that video up in front of me in the future.

As for Mira’s mate-bond settlement, he never planned to give her that many shares for real.

He only thought that after using her for so many years, he owed her some compensation.

He would let Mira seal the mate bond and leave the Shadowrune Pack for good.

Then it would be just me and him again, inside the Shadowrune Pack.

He just never expected I’d answer him in such a final, merciless way.

After I understood what he’d been thinking, all I felt for him was contempt.

All night long, he sat on the floor of my room until sunrise.

It had only been one day, but it was like every ounce of life had been drained out of him.

His eyes were dull, his shoulders collapsed.

There was nothing left of the Alpha who used to rule the Shadowrune Pack.

The door opened.

“Bro, you didn’t sleep at all,” Mira said, as gentle and well-behaved as ever. “Can your body even handle that?”

She sighed, as if helpless. “Why does Tessa hate me so much? Even if she wanted to die, she shouldn’t have picked my mating ceremony day. She made the Shadowrune Pack look terrible.”

“Now it’s blown up like this,” she added. “All our guests are important people. Bro, when do you think we can redo the mating ceremony?”

My brother lifted his head and looked at her.

His gaze was so cold it was like he was staring at something dead.

Mira shifted uneasily. “Bro… why are you looking at me like that? It’s scary.”

“Tessa is dead,” my brother said, his voice iced over. “And you still have the nerve to think about a mating ceremony?”

Mira froze, then immediately tried to move closer, ready to act cute.

“Bro, I know sis embarrassed you,” she started. “But I’ll help you—”

A slap cracked through the air.

Mira’s head snapped to the side, her body locking up where she stood.

My brother stared at her with icy contempt. “Don’t forget,” he said, “you’re nothing but a dog I picked up.”

“All these years, your owner tossed you a few extra bones,” he went on. “And you forgot what you are, didn’t you?”

I never expected my brother to say something like that to Mira.

Neither did Mira.

She clutched her cheek, panic and disbelief flooding her eyes.

My brother didn’t look at her again. He turned and strode out.

At the doorway, he stopped. “I forgot to tell Mira to get the hell out of the Shadowrune Pack immediately.”

He turned back, and just as his hand reached for her door, he heard a venomous voice from inside.

“Back then, you thirteen rogues should’ve just finished her off!”

“If Tessa had died in a worse way back then and really made my brother lose face, how could he be treating me like this now?”

“He must think I forced Tessa to die,” Mira hissed, “and that’s why he’s coming at me like this.”

Her shriek climbed higher. “I paid you so much money. You useless pieces of trash!”

The door slammed into the wall with a thunderous bang. It was deafening.

Mira jolted, instinctively hanging up the phone, already turning with the familiar, ingratiating smile she always wore.

She didn’t even get a word out.

My brother’s hand was already locked around her throat.
