My Adopted Sister Rejected the Comatose Duke, So I Married Him and Became His Duchess Chapter 07

My breath caught, but my eyes gradually brightened.

Did Alexander still retain fragments of his memories?

Was he asking this question as a secret signal that only I would understand?

I recalled the details of our time together, and the answer nearly left my lips.

But Vivian suddenly shoved me aside.

“You have never truly spent time with Alexander. How could you possibly know what he likes? Let me

answer.”

She planted herself firmly in front of me and gazed lovingly at the man in the bed.

“We were in love for three years. Of course I know you better than anyone. What you want most right now

must be the oat porridge I make for you.”

Her voice grew more confident with every word.

“When you were ill last year, I cooked it for you once. You were deeply moved and said it was the most comforting food you had ever eaten. You told me that whenever you fell ill in the future, you hoped I would

make porridge for you again.”

“You could not speak during these past few months, so I placed porridge beside your bed again and again, hoping the familiar aroma would awaken you. Now that you have finally opened your eyes, I will go to the kitchen at once and let you taste how deeply I have missed you.”

By the time she finished, she had even forced two tears from her eyes.

Then she turned towards the scribes and family representatives.

“People have always accused me of wanting nothing but the Windermere title and fortune. But this proves that my love for Alexander is pure and sincere.”

A scribe immediately lifted his quill and recorded her touching words on the parchment.

Baron and Baroness Gray eagerly supported her story.

“Vivian has been cherished and pampered since childhood. She had never entered a kitchen herself. Yet for

Alexander, she was willing to learn how to cook, hoping he could taste something she had prepared with her

own hands when he awakened.”

Their complete lack of shame left me speechless.

The Duchess stood nearby, the crease between her brows growing deeper.

Her expression clearly showed her disgust.

I nearly asked her outright whether she truly wanted her son to marry such a false and calculating woman.

Clearly, she was struggling with the same question.

When she saw the confusion on Alexander’s face, she finally interrupted Vivian’s carefully staged display of

devotion.

“Enough. This is a recovery chamber, not a banquet hall. You have given your answer. Now let Evelyn speak.

The Duchess personally brought me back to the bedside.

I looked at Alexander and quietly gave my answer.

“The strongest cheese you can find, served with a few figs.”

The room instantly fell silent.

A moment later, Vivian burst out laughing.

“Evelyn, if you’re going to invent an answer, you should at least make it believable. Alexander despises food with such a strong smell.”

“Whenever he smelled cheese at a banquet, he would order the servants to remove it immediately. Why would it be the first thing he wants after waking?”

When Alexander remained silent, I almost began to doubt my own memory.

But I had not remembered incorrectly.

His spirit had told me countless times that cheese was his favourite food and that its powerful aroma made

him feel more awake.

He had even said that once he awakened, he would eat an entire wheel by himself.

Had my memory somehow failed me?

Or had that spirit been teasing me all along?
