My Adopted Sister Rejected the Comatose Duke, So I Married Him and Became His Duchess Chapter 05

“Was it truly you who cared for me all this time?”

Obvious suspicion filled his eyes.

Caught off guard, Vivian stiffened.

Alexander noticed the brief flicker of guilt in her gaze.

He coughed weakly, his voice turning even colder.

“Answer me. Was it you?”

I immediately stopped walking away.

If he was suspicious, it meant he might still have some vague memories of what had happened.

Even if he remembered only a little, I still had a chance to claim the reward that rightfully belonged to me.

As the atmosphere grew increasingly awkward, Baron and Baroness Gray exchanged a glance and hurried to the bedside together.

“Of course it was her. This is your fiancée, Vivian, the woman you love most. Have you forgotten? You have

only just awakened, so it is perfectly natural for your memories to be confused. She truly has been the one

caring for you these past six months.”

They crowded eagerly around the bed, deliberately blocking Alexander’s view so he could not see me.

The Duchess gave my shoulder an apologetic pat before stepping forward as well.

“Everyone, move back. Do not overwhelm my son.”

After Vivian reluctantly stepped aside, the Duchess took Alexander’s hand, her eyes filling with tears.

“Your awakening is a miracle granted to House Windermere by the gods. Now that you have returned to us,

everything can finally go back to the way it was. I will bring in the finest physicians to help you recover, and I

will continue protecting our lands and our family until you are ready.”

Alexander had only just awakened and remained extremely weak.

He looked at his mother without speaking again, clearly trying to gather his strength.

The scribes and representatives from the noble families quietly recorded the reunion between mother and

son.

The Duchess needed everyone to witness for themselves that the Windermere heir had awakened and that

his lands would not descend into chaos.

I was merely an insignificant figure whom no one recognised.

I could not even force my way to the bedside.

But I still refused to leave.

I wanted to see whether there was any chance for the situation to change.

Vivian, who had been pushed aside, was clearly growing anxious.

She had remained at the castle for several days just so she could claim credit the instant Alexander opened his eyes and convince everyone that she was the devoted woman who had stayed beside him.

Now that her plan had failed, she directed all her frustration at me.

“Evelyn, why are you still here? Are you still fantasising about marrying into a family that will never belong to you? Even if I refuse to marry him, you will never take my place. Get out. Do not bring your ill fortune anywhere near Alexander.”

I suppressed the anger burning inside me and stood up to her for the first time.

“Do not celebrate too soon. No one knows whom Alexander will marry yet.”

Baron and Baroness Gray stared at me in disbelief.

“How dare you answer back? Come outside with us immediately. Clearly, no one has disciplined you these past few months, and you have forgotten your place.”

All three of them grabbed me and tried to drag me forcibly from the recovery chamber.

I struggled with all my strength, but I was no match for them.

Just as they were about to pull me through the doorway, Alexander pushed away his mother’s supporting hand and stared directly at us.

“Stop.”
