I looked at him calmly. “Whether you pretended to lose your memory or asked me to go along with it, wasn’t it all just so you could stay close to Lily? So why are you 

here now?” 

Leo’s eyes flickered. He couldn’t explain it himself. Without me constantly talking beside him, something 

just felt… empty. 

I let out a quiet sigh. “Next Monday, I’ll have a new brother. Everything before that is in the past. Please don’t bother me anymore.” 

Leo stood there, head lowered, unable to say a word. 

But he stubbornly refused to leave. 

Right then, Elias’s voice drifted over, light but edged with amusement. “Hey, Leo. You’re in here talking to 

my sister while your friend’s waiting outside alone? That doesn’t seem very nice.” 

The air instantly turned tense. 

Leo let out a cold laugh. “Don’t get so full of yourself. 

I’ve known Claire way longer than you have.” 

Elias didn’t get upset. Instead, he placed a sheet of cute stickers he’d picked out into my hand. 

“Time doesn’t matter,” he said easily. “In Claire’s 

heart, I’m the most important brother.” 

He looked ridiculously proud of that fact. 

Leo scoffed. “And how do you know you’re the most important? Obviously I’m the one who–ah!” 

Before he could finish, the water bottle in Elias’s hand 

suddenly leaked, spilling all over Leo’s clothes. 

Elias looked at him apologetically. “Sorry. My grip slipped.” 

Leo, already on edge, snapped. He yanked the bottle 

away and threw it at Elias. 

My temper flared instantly. I shoved Leo back. “Are you 

seriously trying to start something?” 

“It wasn’t me!” Leo protested. “He didn’t hold the 

bottle right—” 

I ignored him, my chest tightening as I saw the damp sleeve of Elias’s shirt. I quickly grabbed some napkins and helped him wipe it dry. 

Leo’s voice turned small. “Claire… my clothes are wet 

too…” 

I looked up, glaring at him. “Leave. Now.” 

He opened his mouth like he wanted to argue, but the look on my face stopped him. In the end, he clenched his jaw and walked off, frustrated. 

After that, everything leading up to the adoption ceremony went smoothly. 

When Elias and I went out to pick a gift, Mom’s voice 

bubbled with excitement in my head. “Pick something special. My girl deserves to shine!” 

When we tried on outfits for the ceremony, she kept 

praising me, saying everything looked good on me. 

No matter what I did, she was there, talking to me in 

my mind. I had gotten used to her presence. It made me 

feel safe. 

On the day of the ceremony, Dad stepped forward and 

placed a firm hand on Elias’s shoulder. Without any 

unnecessary words, he took out a metal pin from his 

jacket pocket and fastened it to Elias’s collar himself. 

“From today on, you’re part of this family,” Dad said, 

his voice low and steady. “In the Sovereign Republic of 

Vandonia, the name Vane means responsibility. It also 

means you’ll always have us behind you.” 

Mom’s voice trembled with emotion in my head. 

“Seeing this… I have no regrets in this life.” 

I wanted to tell her not to cry. 

But then I realized… she couldn’t hear me. 

After the ceremony, Dad sent Elias and me off to play 

with the younger guests. 

I was by the slide, laughing and playing with my 

friends, completely carefree. 

Suddenly, someone shouted, “Watch out!” 

I froze, turning just in time to see an older student riding straight toward me on a skateboard. 

My foot slipped. I hit the ground hard. Everything went 

black. 

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital 

bed. 

Elias was holding my hand tightly, his expression filled with worry. “Thank God you’re okay. The doctor said 

it’s just some scrapes. You’ll be fine after some rest. 

But next time… please be careful. I… I was really 

worried.” 

He pulled me into a gentle hug. 

I hugged him back, but something felt… missing.
