This sentence was the final straw that broke Xavier.

He collapsed to the ground. Watching me slip Niels’ ring onto my finger, he let out a shrill, desperate laugh.

“Fine… I’ll go…”

“Fran, I’ll do anything as long as you’re happy.”

He stood up unsteadily and walked out of the restaurant.

After that, Xavier truly disappeared without a trace.

I heard he went to work on construction sites, doing manual labor, and donated all the money he

earned to orphanages.

I thought he had finally faced reality.

A month later, I received a text from an unknown number.

[Fran, if you want to save Niels, come to the abandoned dock alone.]

I stared at the screen, a smile crossing my face. Niels had lost contact on his business trip, and it

was all part of my plan.

I called the police, stepped on the gas, and drove to the abandoned dock to see the final result of my

revenge.

The smell of gasoline was overwhelming inside the dock warehouse. Niels was tied to a wooden

chair, his head hanging low.

Surprisingly, Anne was standing behind him.

Somehow she had escaped the basement. She was bony, her face covered in knife scars, holding a lighter in her hand.

“Fran, you’re finally here.” Anne laughed maniacally.

“You took everything from me. Today, I’m taking your fiancé down with me!”

Iremained calm, “Anne, you can’t escape. The police will be here any

minute.”

“I don’t care!”

She screamed and flicked the lighter open, ready to throw it into the pool of gasoline.

At that critical moment. A figure lunged out from behind the shelves and tackled Anne violently.

Xavier locked her in a tight hold from behind, and the two crashed heavily to the ground. The

lighter slipped from her hand and rolled away.

“Fran! Take him and run!” Xavier roared at me, covered in mud and grime.

Anne let out a shriek, pulled a knife from behind, and stabbed it hard into Xavier’s abdomen.

“Go to hell!”

The blade pierced him repeatedly, and blood soaked through Xavier’s clothes in an instant.

But his arms still clamped tightly around Anne’s neck, refusing to loosen even a little.

I stepped forward to untie the rope and steady Niels.

I turned to look down at Xavier lying in a pool of blood, my heart remained unmoved.

“Fran…” Blood foamed at Xavier’s mouth as he breathed weakly.

He looked at me and forced a faint smile.

“I… finally… got to protect you once…

“Forgive me… Please.”

He lifted his blood-stained hand, trying to reach for me.

I stood there, looking down at him coldly.

“Xavier, do you think dying for me will make me forgive you?”.

“In your dreams.”

“What you owe me will never be repaid.”

Xavier’s hand froze in mid-air.

The focus in his eyes slowly faded, and his head slumped to the side helplessly.

Tears mixed with blood dripped onto the ground.

“Yeah…”

“I dragged you down for two lifetimes.”
