Locked in the Room During an Allergy Attack Because I Couldn’t Speak Chapter 04

Slade took Tansy through her checkup. When he got back to the vocal cord unit, the bench was empty.

He called me.

Cold automated message.

Tansy stood beside him, cupping her throat. “Is Tierney still mad?”

Slade’s face was dark.

“She’s getting worse.”

He sent me a message. Not delivered.

He stared at that symbol. His fingers stopped.

Tansy grabbed his sleeve.

“Slade, don’t worry.”

“She’s just upset you took me first. She’ll come around when she cools off.”

Slade didn’t answer. He drove straight home.

The front door opened. The house was too quiet.

All my things were gone. Just a few boxes of medication left on the coffee table.

One was unopened.

One had pills sorted out and shoved back in.

The nebulizer sat untouched. The seal was still intact.

A sticky note was stuck beside the pill boxes: [After meals. Can’t take together?]

Slade picked up the note. His thumb pressed down slowly.

Tansy walked in. She saw the medication on the table. Her face flickered.

Slade looked at her.

“You told me you reminded her to take her meds.”

Tansy’s eyes went red immediately.

“I did.”

“But Tierney never liked me looking after her. I treat her like a bestie and she treats me like an enemy. You know that.”

Slade didn’t move to comfort her.

He turned and pulled up the living room security footage.

Tansy reached to stop him. “Slade, we don’t need to check this. She’ll just think we were spying on her.”

Slade moved his hand away.

The footage loaded.

Tansy on the couch, watching the game. The TV was blasting.

Me pushing myself up from the coffee table. Trying to get water.

Tansy kicking out her leg in excitement.

Me falling. Knee hitting the table. Pill boxes scattering everywhere.

Slade’s hand froze on the mouse.

Tansy’s face went pale.

“I was just startled.”

The footage kept going.

Tansy reached out, trying to close the laptop.

“Don’t watch this.”

“She made herself look pitiful on purpose. She’s waiting for you to feel sorry for her.”

Slade shook her off for the first time.

“She didn’t know I’d check the footage.”

The late-night timestamp showed me alone in the living room.

I packed my medical records, my documents, and a few clothes into a suitcase.

Before I walked out, I stood in the entryway. I looked back once.

The door closed. I was gone from the screen.

Slade pulled up my ticket records immediately.

Location services off. Flight landed.
