Life changed overnight. New furniture. New clothes. Tutors for etiquette, piano, riding-

everything a heiress should know. I learned fast. Faster than anyone expected.

Margaret and her brother were caught three days later. Stolen goods, kidnapping charges, the

works. They’d rot in prison.

Sofia went to an orphanage. Isabella cried for a day. I felt nothing.

Sophia seemed innocent enough now; she was too young to have done anything.

But later, she would become the demon who killed me.

On the surface, I was the perfect daughter. But inside? The scar hadn’t healed. I still had

nightmares. Still kept them at arm’s length.

Until my fifth birthday.

The party was huge. Every socialite in the city came to fawn over me. I wore a gorgeous dress, smiled on cue, and felt absolutely nothing.

I slipped out to the garden. Sat on a swing in the moonlight.

A man in a suit approached. “Ella? I’m Victor Black. Your father’s business partner. Happy birthday.”

He handed me a music box. I didn’t take it. Something about his eyes was wrong.

“Dad says not to accept gifts from strangers.”

His smile twitched. He grabbed my arm-hard. “Come on, sweetheart. I’ve got something better to show you.”

I struggled. “Let go-

He clamped a hand over my mouth and ran toward the dark end of the garden.

Kidnapper.

I was terrified. More terrified than I’d been in either of my lives.

Then I heard it: a roar.

“LET GO OF MY DAUGHTER!”

Alexander. He and Isabella had noticed I was gone.

Victor pulled a knife. Pressed it to my throat. “Back off! One step and she’s dead!”

Alexander froze. “Victor, you’re in deep with gambling debts. I get it. But hurt my girl, and there’s

no place on earth you can hide. Name your price.”

“One billion. Now. Or we all go to hell together.”

His hand shook. He meant it.

Isabella screamed and lunged. Victor swung the knife at her.

But Alexander was faster. He threw himself in front of her.

The blade sank into his stomach.
