By the time I got to the hospital, Benjamin’s mother had already walked out. My mom sat crying, wiping her eyes, muttering anxiously about what to do. 

Benjamin rushed around trying to handle everything. 

The hospital hallway was dim. Two nurses huddled in an old nurses‘ station, gossiping. “That mother–in–law is something else. Who still cares about having a son these days?” 

“At least the baby’s father seems decent.” 

“If he weren’t, she’d have no one to rely on.” 

The room had three beds. The other two were surrounded by mothers and mothers–in–law, all of them singing Benjamin’s 

praises. 

They acted like he was the best man who’d ever lived. But he was just doing the bare minimum every mother does. Why didn’t anyone ever praise them? 

Just because he was a man, was the bar really that low? 

Standing there as an outsider, I found it laughable. But I remembered being in her shoes once, feeling so grateful to him. How could I have been so stupid? 

A cold laugh cut through my thoughts. 

“Seeing how good he is to me now?” My sister smirked from the bed. “You regret it, don’t you?” 

“You’re jealous. Think about how pathetic you were when you had your baby. No matter how much you regret it, Emma, I 

finally beat you for once.” 

She started coughing violently. A patch of red bloomed through her thin blanket. 

The nurses rushed in, clumsily trying to stop the bleeding, and pushed me out of the room. 

The hallway floor had just been mopped. The old linoleum 

gave off a musty smell that made me want to gag. 

I honestly didn’t understand how she thought she was better 

off than me.
