Last Life She Killed Me for My Rich Husband, This Life I Let Her Have Him Chapter 06

When I was five months pregnant, my old high school class president called to organize a ten-year reunion.

I hesitated. “I should check with my husband first.”

He sounded awkward on the phone. “It’s just a small thing.”

“Yeah,” I said casually. “I run everything by him.”

He didn’t say anything after that.

My sister came to the reunion too. We were twins, and the school had put us in the same class back then.

When I got there, I saw a lot of people had brought their spouses. Post-graduation reunions only have two purposes: flaunting your wealth and your relationship.

In the last life, I came with Benjamin, and my sister showed up alone, heavily pregnant.

Watching Benjamin dote on me, pouring me water, peeling my shrimp, she kept checking her phone, hoping for even one message to make her look less pathetic in front of our old classmates.

Everyone else’s happiness made her loneliness even worse. People started whispering.

“Olivia, I heard you have to follow your husband’s every order at home. Is that true?”

“He even picks out your clothes? You can’t eat until he lifts his fork?”

“Oh my God, how do you live like that? Who cares if you’re rich? You have no dignity.”

Between the taunts and seeing Benjamin cater to my every whim, my sister started wishing Charles would treat her that way.

She wanted the money, the love, the companionship, all of it. So she went home and fought with Charles.

Then she ran to Mom and Dad to complain. How Charles didn’t care about her, didn’t pay attention to her. Why couldn’t he be like other women’s husbands?

I almost died laughing. How many husbands give you three hundred thousand dollars a month? Forget dignity. I’d gladly wait on him hand and foot.

Back in the present, I was quietly sitting off to the side, admiring my little nest egg. After a few months of observation, I realized Charles wasn’t as awful as my sister made him out to be.

Yes, he was bossy and overbearing. But he wasn’t cold or heartless.

He used his limited days off to cook me a romantic dinner. He remembered what I liked and avoided what I didn’t. Even though his phone rang a dozen times during that one meal.

All I ever saw was his furrowed brow and thoughtful eyes. But my sister kept complaining that he didn’t do laundry or take care of the kids like Benjamin did.

You can’t expect a man like him to fuss over the little things.

My quiet loneliness felt out of place among all the laughter and chatter.

My sister bossed Benjamin around like crazy, making sure everyone saw how obediently he doted on her. He played along with a smile, no complaints at all.

But I knew what was underneath that shiny surface. A cramped apartment, crushing debt, and a future as bleak as it was uncertain.

The hundred grand Benjamin used to marry her? Borrowed. The down payment on their place? Borrowed. And they still had rent to pay every month.

Mom tried several times to convince my sister to divorce him, but she was like a zombie, convinced they’d get through it together. She absolutely refused to leave him.

I just laughed. That was exactly like me in the last life. Except back then, I was lovesick. She was just delusional, dreaming of becoming a CEO’s wife.

Several girls sighed enviously. “Olivia, your husband is so good to you. Handsome, emotionally steady. He really treasures you.”

I couldn’t help but snort. Treasure her, right. When a man has no other resources to offer a partner, emotional effort becomes the easiest thing to offer.

Sometimes a single “he’s good to me” is enough to make a girl give away her whole life.

My sister saw me laugh and puffed up like she was ready to explode, fire in her eyes.

“What are you laughing at? Don’t think just because you have some money now, it’s actually yours. Living off a man isn’t easy. We women need to rely on ourselves.”

I nodded like a bobblehead. “You’re right. You’re completely right.”

She kept lecturing me. “You can’t spoil a man too much. Either you control him, or he controls you.”

I kept nodding. “Absolutely. Totally.”

“Look at me. Yeah, we don’t have much now, but he does whatever I say. True love is priceless, you know?”

Under my sister’s lead, the reunion turned into a roast session aimed at me. I became the biggest failure in the class, a useless woman living off a man.

I curled up in the corner of a couch like a cornered animal, letting them mock me without a word.

But in my head, I was thinking, I’ve saved over a million dollars these past few months. What should I invest in? Charles would go bankrupt in ten years. I needed to secure my own future before then.

Then the voices stopped. A tall figure cast a shadow over me. The air seemed to tighten around me.

“Are you mute?” His voice was cold. “You let people talk to you like that and don’t say anything back?”

“You’re embarrassing me. What are you waiting for? Get up. We’re going home. I’ll deal with this when I’m done with my work.”

I stared at him in shock, didn’t argue, and quietly stood up and walked out. Behind me, the laughter only got louder.
