The airport security line felt like walking through a minefield with a target on my back

Every dark-haired man in a suit made my pulse spike. Every security camera felt like Dante’s eyes I kept my head down, ball cap low, Sofia’s oversized coat swallowing my frame I looked nothing like the polished woman who attended Moretti galas in designer dresses-and that was the point.

Sofia had driven me in silence, gripping my hand at every red light. At the departures drop-off, she’d held me so tight I thought my ribs would crack.

“You call me the second you land.”

“I will.”

“And Val?” Her eyes were fierce, glassy. “Don’t you dare feel guilty. He made his choice. Now you make yours!

Gate B34. Boarding had begun. I was three passengers away from the scanner when my burner phone

vibrated.

Rome: They know you’re gone. Dante’s losing it. He sent Marco and two others to the airports. Which terminal

are you in?

My blood ran cold. I typed with trembling fingers: About to board. Don’t text again. Delete this conversation.

I handed my boarding pass to the gate agent, my smile tight, my hands ice. The walk down the jetway felt like the longest thirty seconds of my life. I found my seat-window, near the back-and pressed my forehead against the cold plastic, willing the plane to move.

Ten minutes. Twenty. A delay announcement. “Ladies and gentlemen, we’re experiencing a brief hold. Please

remain seated.”

My stomach dropped. I scanned the cabin. Normal passengers, bored faces, a child kicking the seat ahead Nothing suspicious. But every second on the ground was a second closer to being found.

Then-movement at the front of the plane. A flight attendant speaking to someone at the cabin door. A man’s

voice, low, authoritative.

I couldn’t see his face.

My hand found the armrest and squeezed until my knuckles turned white. Please. Please Please.

The flight attendant returned, smiling blandly. “Sorry for the delay, folks. We’ll be pushing back momentarily.”
