Keep Your Millions, Doctor. I’m DONE. Chapter 04

Keep Your Millions, Doctor. I’m DONE. Chapter 04

After mailing the signed divorce papers to Preston, I drove to the cemetery.

Finn’s grave was covered in fresh flowers and a small stuffed animal.

Just like every year when I visited.

“Finn. It’s Mom. I’m here again.”

“I’ve always regretted that I let my temper kill you.”

“I kept hoping one day you’d come back to me. But now that the day’s here, I don’t have the strength to start over.”

Tears poured down my face like a summer thunderstorm.

I leaned down and pressed a kiss to the headstone.

And then, just like that, the rain stopped.

I looked up and met Preston’s eyes—full of regret.

He held an umbrella over me, leaving his own shoulders soaked.

“Your health’s fragile. Don’t sit on the cold ground. Let’s talk in the car.”

He draped his dry jacket over my shoulders and softened his tone.

“I won’t sign the divorce papers. Whatever Wendy gets, you’ll get the same.”

“You both made mistakes. Let the past be the past. Don’t bring it up again.”

He reached for my hand, trying to slide that worn, scratched-up ring back onto my finger.

I pulled away.

“I can’t let it go. I’ll never forget.”

Preston’s face hardened. “Jennifer, don’t push it. I’m not sending Wendy away again—not for you.”

I shook my head calmly.

“Don’t worry. I won’t hurt her.”

“I just want you to give Finn’s name back. Just for today.”

He glanced at his watch. “Make it fast. The demolition crew’s on their way.”

“The show’s over. The fake prison and the whole site are being redeveloped. My dad wants to turn it into an amusement park—a gift for the new baby.”

I stood there, frozen, not believing what I was hearing.

“What about Finn? What about my baby?”

Preston’s voice stayed soft.

“I’ll relocate him. Somewhere nicer than this. Promise.”

The construction trucks rumbled in, bulldozers aimed straight at Finn’s headstone.

Without thinking, I threw myself in front of it, arms spread wide.

“No! You can’t dig him up!”

“Preston, please! I’ll stay out of your life. I’ll leave you and Wendy alone. Just don’t touch Finn—I’ll do anything!”

Preston stepped toward me, then stopped cold.

His jaw tightened. “Jennifer, don’t be dramatic. It’s just a plot of land. Not a big deal.”

He reached for me, and I slapped him across the face—hard.

His cheek flared red. His eyes went dark.

“Leave her. Dig it up.”

He walked away, abandoning me in the vast cemetery.

The workers looked at each other, hesitant. Then the excavator arm swung up.

I trembled and curled around the headstone, squeezing my eyes shut.

On his drive back, Preston got a call from the site manager.

“Mr. Hartley, the stand-in sent the meeting transcript to your email.”

He opened it absently, skimming the lines.

When his eyes hit the last paragraph, his face drained white.
