Her scream cut through the living room like a blade.

My parents dropped the interrogation and ran to the maid’s quarters.

I followed at a slow pace.

“What’s wrong, Nana?” My mom pushed the door open.

Nina was on the floor, pale as paper, pointing at the air vent. She’d pried the grill open with a hanger.

A thumb-sized black camera dangled from inside, its red light blinking like a cold, unblinking eye.

My dad saw it. His face went white.

“What is this?” He whipped around to look at me.

I leaned against the doorframe.

“Surveillance,” I said, as if commenting on the weather.

“Elena!” He lunged at me, grabbing my collar. “You planted cameras in the house? In Nina’s room? Have you lost your mind?”

My mom rushed over, crying.

“Elena! What are you doing? Are you trying to tear this family apart? You won’t even give them privacy?”

Mrs. Shaw dropped to her knees, clutching Nina.

“Sir, ma’am, we may be poor, but we have dignity! If Miss treats us like this, we’ll pack and leave tonight—never come back!”

Nina sobbed into her mother’s arms, the picture of a violated victim.

“Elena, why do you hate me so much? What did I do to deserve being watched?”

I looked at all four of them—their anger, pain, and self-pity—and felt nothing.

“Let go,” I said coldly.

He held tighter.

“I’m smashing all your junk! Tomorrow morning, I’m taking you to a psychiatric hospital. You’re getting treated, or you’re not coming out!”
