I’ve Been Suspicious Since The Day I Was Born Chapter 03

She was hardworking, attentive, loyal.

She took care of us like we were her own.

So when she asked if her daughter Nina could stay for the final exam push, my parents agreed without hesitation.

I was the only one who said no.

I told them I couldn’t live with a stranger. It made me anxious.

My mom tried to soothe me.

“Nina’s such a sweet girl. You two used to play together. Let her come—it’ll be nice having company.”

“I don’t need company,” I sneered. “I need safety.”

The day Nina arrived, I blocked her at the door.

I told her she wasn’t welcome.

It took Mrs. Shaw crying to my dad on the phone, and him screaming at me over it, before Nina was let in.

She was put in the guest room next to mine.

That night, I made her move to the maid’s quarters downstairs. I said sleeping near her would ruin my exam luck.

My mom called me cruel. I kept my face cold and said nothing.

When I didn’t back down, she raised her voice.

“Elena, stop being ridiculous! Apologize to Mrs. Shaw and Nina!”

Apologize?

I looked at the three people who felt more like family to each other than to me.

I almost laughed.

“Why should I?” I asked. “I won’t hurt myself. And you’re my parents—you wouldn’t hurt me. So who does that leave?”

“That’s enough!” My dad exploded.
