On graduation photo day, the photographer told couples to stand closer.

Tristan pushed me aside by the shoulder and pulled Briar next to him.

“Briar and I both got perfect SAT scores. We look better together in the shot.”

It wasn’t the first time he’d pushed me away.

When I asked him about a problem, he said I was too slow and wasting his time.

But when Briar struggled with math, he stayed up all night breaking every step down for her.

I asked him to study together at the library—he said I’d distract him.

But when Briar dropped one spot in rankings, he skipped class to walk with her by the sea.

The photographer joked,

“You two look like a couple—same grades, same look.”

Tristan smiled at Briar, warm and proud.

“We’ve always been the perfect team.”

Briar blushed. Everyone cheered.

I stood outside the circle, still clutching the graduation photo number card I’d wanted to take with him.

But he never left a spot for me.

Now, I didn’t want it anymore.

I’d spent a whole night picking a dress, tied my hair three times.

In the counselor’s office, she handed me my SAT scores and smiled.

“Not bad. Have you thought about which college you want?”

She paused. “I heard you’re planning to apply to New York—same as Tristan?”

“Those schools are competitive.”

“Private tuition is high, public is also tough.”

“You might want to think about it. Wyoming’s not a bad option.”

I thanked her and left.

Outside, I ran straight into Tristan and Briar.

Briar rushed over, all warmth. “So this is where you were.”

She handed me a coffee.

“We grabbed some. Tristan got you one too.”

I glanced down.

They both had caramel macchiatos—same sugar level.

She handed me a Dragon Drink.

I’m allergic to mango. Tristan knew that.

I took it and dropped it in the trash.

Briar’s face went stiff.

She looked at Tristan with red-rimmed eyes.

His brow tightened. “What are you upset about now?”

“Because I moved you aside for the photo? That was my call—don’t take it out on her.”

“I already told you—Briar and I both got perfect scores.”

“It made sense for the school promo. And I said I’d take one with you after.”

I looked at him and felt too tired to fight.

He said he’d take a photo with me.

But after the group shots, he never remembered.

On Instagram, he and Briar had taken a dozen shots together.

Everyone cheered for over ten minutes.

He held her tight and never let go.

Then he went with her to Starbucks, and now to the counselor’s office.

An hour passed. Not one message from him. He’d forgotten I existed.

Everything changed when Briar transferred.

Tristan was a math genius.

Briar got straight A’s in literature.

Their names were always paired.

I tried so hard just to keep up—but even the problems they tossed around casually took me a while to process.

He used to be patient with me.

But the more he talked to Briar, the less patience he had left.

That was when I knew—we were already over.

He saw I wasn’t answering and lost his patience.

“Fine. Let’s take one now.”

Before I could respond, he grabbed my phone and handed it to Briar.

She hesitated, then took it.

He stood beside me—but his shoulder didn’t touch mine.

Before I could even look up, he took the phone back and pressed it into my hand.

“There. Happy now? Wait here.”

“I’m taking Briar to get her recommendation letter. We’ll go home together.”

He turned and walked into the office, holding her hand.

I stood there and opened my camera roll.

The photo was blurry—just the gray hallway floor and the corner of his jacket as he walked away.

I stared at it for a long time.

Then I laughed quietly.

I deleted it. Then I blocked him.

I held my score report and left the school.

I wasn’t waiting anymore.
