I’ll Marry His Rival and Burn His Empire to Ash Chapter 13

The door opened.

Savannah-Claire walked in carefully, carrying a silver tray. This was her first time inside the main house of the Devereaux estate, and she had dressed meticulously for it. The silk gown she wore had cost her half a year’s rent at her old apartment.

She had imagined this day countless times. Ava, that cold woman, was finally gone, and she would become the new mistress of this grand estate.

She wore the gentle, obedient smile she had practiced for so long, her voice as sweet as Southern peach tea.

“Jack, I made you something to eat. I thought you might be hungry…”

Her voice died in her throat.

Jackson wasn’t looking at her. He stood before the desk, a single dim lamp casting his rigid silhouette onto the wall like a silent tombstone. Torn scraps of paper littered the expensive rug.

Savannah-Claire’s smile froze. She didn’t understand. If those were divorce papers, why had he torn them up? Shouldn’t he be celebrating?

An inexplicable panic surged through her.

“Jack?” she called tentatively.

Jackson finally turned around.

There was no expression on his face. Those blue eyes, which usually held a trace of impatient indulgence, were now like two frozen lakes. There was nothing in them. No love, no hate, not even anger. Only a dead, chilling emptiness.

He didn’t look at the tray in her hands. Instead, he studied her from head to toe, as if examining a stranger.

Then he spoke, his voice terrifyingly calm.

“Locking the stable gate and releasing the Dobermans. That was your idea, wasn’t it?”

Clang.

The silver tray slipped from Savannah-Claire’s trembling hands. The delicate bone china shattered on the floor, splashing warm soup and food all over her.

Her face went as white as the wall. Her lips trembled, but she couldn’t form a single word.

That reaction was enough.

Jackson looked at her. Looked at this woman he had once believed to be innocent and kind, if a little vain. The girl who cried over a lost cat had been nothing but a clumsy illusion.

For such a lie, he had hurt Chloe and driven Ava away.

He had never truly seen anyone clearly.

Savannah-Claire’s mind went blank. Terror gripped her. She didn’t understand how everything had gone so wrong. If he and Ava were divorced, shouldn’t he be running to her?

Why had he torn up the documents? Why was he looking at her as if she were trash to be discarded?
