I Was the Mistress at My Own Wedding Chapter 03

I Was the Mistress at My Own Wedding Chapter 03

I covered my cheek in shock.

The pain made it hard to breathe.

In that moment, the last bit of hope inside me shattered.

I couldn’t believe it.

My own mother hadn’t even asked what had really happened before deciding I was the one at fault.

She knew Ethan and I had been in love for seven years.

After Dad punched Ethan, he just stood there.

His lips moved a few times before he finally looked at me and spoke quietly.

“Lily, just apologize for now.”

“After all… you were in the wrong here.”

I stood frozen.

For a moment, I wondered if I was still dreaming.

I couldn’t believe any of this was actually happening.

After a long silence, Claire let out a soft sigh.

She walked over and looked down at me.

Then she bent down and gently smoothed my messy hair.

She brushed the dirt from my face with her hand.

“Lily, this hurts, doesn’t it?”

I stared at her blankly.

Claire smiled.

Her voice was gentle, but she sounded almost as if she were savoring my pain.

“At the wedding you’d been looking forward to more than anything, the bridesmaids and groomsmen humiliated you.”

“The person you trusted most forced you to come here and apologize to the man you thought you were marrying and his wife.”

“And the parents who raised you for more than twenty years slapped you.”

She paused.

“I forgot to tell you.”

“I did all of this on purpose.”

“I approached you on purpose.”

“I deliberately let Ethan do whatever he wanted.”

“And today, I deliberately destroyed everything you’d been looking forward to.”

Claire straightened.

“Lily, do you know something?”

“You’re really not that important.”

“Even if I told you that you’re the one who truly belongs to the Sterling family, and I’m only the child who was switched with you, what difference would it make?”

“Your adoptive parents only had to look at me once before they chose my side.”

“Your biological brother didn’t even bother asking what really happened before slapping you.”

“And Ethan, the man who’d been promised to you in a family-arranged engagement since you were born…”

She looked at me almost tenderly.

“He’d been mine for a long time already.”

My entire body went rigid.

Impossible…

How could my parents not be my biological parents?

How could Adrian be my biological brother?

I whipped around to look at Mom and Dad.

But they avoided my eyes.

Neither of them dared look at me.

Even if I wasn’t their biological daughter, we had still lived together for more than twenty years.

Even people grow attached to a pet after that many years.

As if Dad could see exactly what I was hoping for, he spoke in a low voice.

“If she still refuses to apologize, send her to the police station for a few days.”

“We can’t manage her anymore.”

Ethan stood off to the side.

He didn’t object.

His silence said enough.

No matter how much I explained, no matter how much I cried, I was still taken to the police station.

Afterward, I was given seven days of detention for allegedly assaulting Claire.

The days I spent locked up were long and painful.

All I could do was protect my stomach.

By the time I got out, my body was covered in bruises and marks.

But I wasn’t going to give up.

The first thing I did after my release was have a DNA test expedited.

Then I went to a place Adrian passed every day and waited for him.

The moment he appeared, I flung the DNA test results at his face.
