I Was The Backup Plan, She Was The Return Chapter 08

I Was The Backup Plan, She Was The Return Chapter 08

After two minutes of silence, one coworker had the sense to offer congratulations.

[Wow! Congratulations, Mr. Mercer and Nora! Wishing you a lifetime of happiness!]

The replies came flooding in.

[Congrats!]

[Congrats!]

I’d checked my phone because I’d remembered I still had work to hand off. I also wanted to check on my resignation paperwork, but this was what I found instead.

I stared at the two messages Julian had posted the night before, wondering what he was trying to do.

Then my phone rang. It was Julian.

I hesitated for a few seconds before answering.

“Nora? Is that you?”

“Yes.”

He let out a relieved breath.

I thought I heard an irritated voice in the background.

“Sir, as I explained, she appears to have left voluntarily. We can’t make her contact you.”

Julian murmured an apology. A few seconds later, the background noise faded, leaving only his

steady breathing.

“Where are you? I’ll come get you.”

I couldn’t understand what he was playing at.

“Don’t bother. I’m letting you go.”

“Julian, I don’t know why you posted that stuff. Maybe you and Sloane had another fight and you’re

trying to get back at her.”

The more I thought about it, the more it hurt, and my voice grew sharper.

“But leave me out of it. I want nothing to do with your relationship!”

“Let’s set a time to file for divorce.”

As soon as I’d said it, my phone died. I’d forgotten to charge it the night before.

He should’ve heard what I needed to say, anyway.

I forced myself to stop thinking about him.

I checked the time and decided to go to the office to finish the handoff in person.

At the entrance, I saw Tyler coming out with a box, looking dejected.

He spotted me and stormed up to me.

“Nora, I never knew you could be so vicious!”

“You never told me you were married. How was I supposed to know?”

“Did you really have to get Julian to fire me?”

I stared at him, wondering what he was talking about.

He sneered.

“Don’t play dumb. Everyone knows Julian quit for you and made headquarters send Sloane back

overseas!”

“You two are ruthless. First he posts those videos of Sloane in an industry Slack channel to

humiliate her.”

“Then he fires me?”

I was stunned. I hadn’t known Julian had done any of that.

Tyler took my silence as confirmation and stepped closer, his anger mounting.

“Answer me, Nora!”

“Why did you get me fired? Do you have any idea how hard my mom worked to get me that job?”

He threw down the box and grabbed my arm.

His grip hurt, and I kicked him hard in the groin.

The kick wasn’t strong enough to stop him. It only made him angrier.

He lunged at me again.

“You bi…”

Before he could finish, a tall figure rushed over and floored him with one punch.

“You put your hands on my wife? You got a death wish?”

“Get lost. I’ll do it again every time you show your face!”
