I Was Sick Of Second Place So I Took Everything Chapter 09

That was when I finally took a proper look at the camera.

The moment I recognized the model, my hands went clammy.

“Silas, this is way too much. I can’t take this.”

I knew exactly why he had given it to me.

I’d mentioned it more than once, back when I was studying at the Sheffield House over the summer. I

wanted to buy a camera after graduation and just travel.

This was one of the models I’d been eyeing-one of my top picks.

“Don’t like it?” he asked.

I ran my fingers over the camera, then glanced at the photo he had just taken.

It looked… really good.

“Not exactly,” I said hesitantly.

“Then what’s the problem? I already bought it.”

“I practically went blind picking it out. You’re not gonna turn down a gift from the heart, are you?”

Silas looked down a bit, smiling. His tone was casual, but there was no mistaking the guilt trip he was laying

on me.

I still insisted. “Then I’ll pay you for it.

“I don’t need your pocket change.”

“How about you just get first place a few more times instead? Give me something to feel proud of as your

tutor.”

In the end, I kept the camera.

After I got home, I went around taking photos of every corner of the house before finally putting it away,

still not quite satisfied.

Now wasn’t the time to indulge.

All winter break, I never let up.

Aside from going next door to ask Silas questions, I stayed up late at home grinding through practice

problems.

After a while, the exhaustion caught up with me.

That day, while waiting for Silas to finish reviewing my work, I rested my head on the desk and closed my

eyes.

At some point, my thoughts became hazy, and I felt cold.

I was half out of it. I thought I felt someone touch my face and forehead and say something, but I couldn’t

make out the words.

Then something was pressed into my mouth, followed by water.

When I woke up again, I realized I was somewhere else.

I was back home, lying in my own bed.

There was something stuck to my forehead.

The door opened, and Silas walked in. “You’re awake? God, you scared me.”

“I couldn’t wake you up earlier, and when I touched your forehead, you were burning up.

“Good thing I had medicine at home,” he said, then added, “Your parents are coming back late. I took your

key from your pocket.”

“I figured you wouldn’t want to sleep in my bed or use my blanket, so I carried you back.”

((

Silas waved a hand in front of my face. “Do you still recognize me? You didn’t fry your brain, did you?”

I slapped his hand away without thinking.

He pointed a thermometer at me. A moment later, he clicked his tongue.

“Still up. Go back to sleep. Sweat it out.”

“And stop stressing about your test papers. You need to learn to balance work and rest.”.

He pressed me back onto the bed and tucked the blanket tightly around me.

I drifted off again.

up the next time, my mom was there.

g on about how lucky I was that Silas had taken care of me and said we needed to properly

sometime.

at fever forced me to rest for two full days before I could get back to studying.

Soon after, it was the New Year’s Eve celebration.

I didn’t go bother Silas again and stayed home doing lots of practice problems on my own.

Once the new year passed, senior year resumed.
