The doctor let out a sigh and left the room.

I slept for a few more hours. When I woke up, I reached for my phone to contact a lawyer about the divorce, but then a call came in from the ER.

“Ma’am, your mother’s condition just took a sudden turn for the worse. You need to get here as fast as you can.”

The fragile calm I had found shattered instantly.

I tore the IV out of my arm and ran, stumbling toward the emergency room.

I found my mother lying alone on a gurney in the hallway. Only a young nurse was with her.

“Where is everyone?”

I grabbed the nurse’s hand.

“Where are the doctors? Why isn’t anyone here?”

Fear kept surging through my chest, over and over.

How could there be no doctors in such a big hospital?

Didn’t Gregory say he had a full medical team here?

The young nurse stammered nervously.

“I heard that Mr. Vance’s wife had an emergency, so he called every available doctor upstairs to see her.”

My mind went blank. On instinct, I dialed Gregory’s number.

It rang who knows how many times before someone picked up.

It was my son’s voice.

“What is it, Mom? What are you doing?”

I forced my voice to stay steady. “Put your father on the phone.”

My son’s voice was impatient.

“Dad doesn’t have time. He’s with Aubrey for her prenatal checkup. Don’t bother us unless it’s important.”

The line went dead.

My mother’s breathing was getting weaker and weaker.

I called Gregory’s assistant and begged him to put me through.

“Mrs. Vance, what’s the matter?”

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the phone. I sobbed into it.

“Gregory, my mother is dying. Please, just send a few doctors down here to operate on her!”

There was a pause, then a cold, mocking laugh.

“Jennifer, are you done yet?”

“My medical team has been in place for hours. What are you pretending for? Do you really have to compete with a young woman like this?”

I was crying openly now. “No, my mom is really dying. I’m begging you, please…”

Gregory just laughed coldly again.

“Then let her die out there.”

Click. The line went dead.

All the strength left my body.

I could only stand there and watch as they pulled the white sheet over my mother’s face. I had no tears left.

I don’t know how long passed before Gregory called me back. His voice was light, casual.

“How’s your mother doing? My medical team is efficient, right? I had them bring in that new foreign drug, too.”

“I’ll let it slide this time, what you did. But tonight is our son’s birthday. You need to come over. He specifically asked for you to make his cake.”

My voice was flat, dead. “Okay.”

I hung up. I turned and went back to the maternity ward.

I placed the fetus I had lost into a small container and placed it in a gift box.

Then I called a courier.

“Here’s a black card. Use it. This must be delivered directly to Gregory Vance.”

At the party that night, Aubrey was dressed up in all her finery, trying to speak to my son.

But Ethan pulled his hand away from her and kept looking around restlessly.

“Where’s Mom? Why isn’t she here yet?”

Gregory was also checking his watch, annoyed.

“Where is she? Still sulking?”

Just then, a courier approached him.

Gregory frowned and took a step back instinctively.

But when the courier mentioned my name, he took the box.

A small smile played on his lips. “A cake box? A little much. Oh well, I suppose I’ll let it slide…”

He opened the lid.

And his face went completely white, bloodless.
