I Was Only His Backup Mate, His Second Choice Luna Chapter 08

In another hospital room, a nurse was changing Aelia’s dressing.

Magnus sat beside the bed peeling an apple for her.

The wound had bled dramatically and missed everything that mattered. After a few days she was nearly back to normal.

The nurse worked the bandage loose and smiled. “Miss Blaze, your boyfriend is something else. Doing all of it himself. I’d be jealous if I were anyone else.”

Aelia flushed, glanced at Magnus, and said nothing at all.

The knife stopped moving in his hand. He looked up at the nurse and his voice went cold.

“I’m not her boyfriend. I’m married. I have a wife. Aelia is like a sister to me. Don’t say things like

that again. I don’t want my wife hearing it and drawing conclusions.”

The color drained out of Aelia’s face.

The nurse stammered an apology and got out.

Then it was the two of them.

Aelia’s eyes were rimmed red, and there was real venom under it.

“After everything Estella has done. After she killed your child. You still won’t sever the bond?”

He set the apple and the knife on the tray and let out a breath.

“No. She’s my wife. When she does something wrong, that’s on me too. Estella is good, Aelia. If she

were the kind of person you’re describing, she would have left me in that ravine to die. She lost that

pup too. She’s grieving the same thing I am. I’ll be around more from now on. She won’t feel unsafe

enough to do something like this again.”

Aelia stared at him.

“She almost killed me. And you’re telling me she’s good?”

He was quiet for a few seconds.

“She put a knife in you and I’ll carry whatever responsibility comes with that. But the same goes the

way. I never held you accountable for the way you’ve treated her, and that doesn’t mean any

other

of it was acceptable.”

He met her eyes.

“We keep our distance from now on. She’s not suffering for you again.”

That broke her. She came off the bed and got both hands around his arm, eyes streaming.

“hen what happens to me? I love you. I have loved you since we were children. I always thought that’s where this ended.”

Her voice climbed.

“All those years I was away at the facility, I waited for you to say something. And you married a machine they built to store my blood.”

She was shouting now.

“She’s a thing the Blaze lab grew. She isn’t fit to sit at the same table as me. I have the bloodline, I have the council votes, I can give you everything she can’t. Why her? Why not me?”

He pulled his arm out of her hands and put space between them, and he didn’t soften it at all.

“Because you have been my sister since we were children. That’s the whole answer.”
